Every winter I fly out to Calgary to visit family. On these trips I usually opt to leave my camera at home so I can spend quality time with the fam but also because transportation is a bit of an issue. My grandparents, who I stay with, have a less than ideal vehicle for winter travel in the Rockies. On this trip I decided to bring my camera but didn't feel confident driving any further than Banff. This unfortunately leaves very few options so I opted to shoot at the oh so popular Vermilion Lakes. When I arrived, I found Mount Rundle hidden beneath thick low lying cloud. I wasn't terribly excited to shoot Mount Rundle to be perfectly honest as it has been done a million times so I kept my eyes open for other compositions/possibilites. About 10 minutes after sunrise I noticed this peak (don't know the name) quickly emerge from a gap in the clouds. I quickly ran out onto the frozen Vermilion Lake, slapped on the 70-200mm and fired off a few shots. I got this image and a wider landscape format image which shows another peak (better comp, not instagram friendly). Definitely happy I brought my camera and was able to capture something unique from a popular spot. I guess the lesson here is don't get tunnel vision a always stay open to different possibilities. About 10 other people stayed in their warm cars hoping for Mount Rundle to make an appearance and left when it didn't.
—i know letting go is hard. letting go is scary. but what’s far more horrifying is staying stuck. stuck somewhere you’re not happy. stuck in a place you have far outgrown. you have to start trusting that you were meant for and are worthy of a big life. you have to let go of all the small things that hold you back. trust that there is something far more magical than you could have ever hoped, waiting for you, when you’re ready to let go. you have to start trusting you wings. how else will you learn to fly🦅✨

The darker it is the longer the shutter time 😊 it took almost 3min for this the light pollution from Canmore and Banff really helped too!
Have you tried long long exposures?

Stuck at work, dreaming about all the breathtaking views I was lucky enough to see this year. But also already filling the calendar full of next years planned trips! So far I’m most exited for our 4 day trip to/around Berg lake followed by a loop through Jasper! What’s on your list for next year?

Mount Rundle at Vermillion Lakes is one of the most iconic locations for a photo in Banff. Unfortunately, the lake was frozen when we turned up and this was the only patch of water nearby. Given the lacking composition, here I’ve gone overboard with editing and made an ethereal interpretation of this scene. Let me know if this looks ridiculous.
I’m not really the type of person to enjoy winter but, for some odd reasons, I actually loved winter out there in Banff. It just hits so different. Maybe just being around mountains or just having the nicest view just gives me this adrenaline. If only I have the money or someone to travel with, I’d go back to this place in a heart beat. The regrets i have at this moment for not taking advantage of having such an amazing view is just too much for me to think about, So I decided to look back at one of the very first pictures that I have ever taken. But hey, if you don’t enjoy scenic views like I do, just keep scrolling fam.

Crisp winter nights never looked so pretty!
In the heart of the Canadian Rockies you’ll find Banff; an alpine town surrounded by towering mountains and breathtaking views. Be sure to check out the Banff Sightseeing Gondola, where you’ll be taken to a lofty altitude of 2,281 metres (7,476ft) to see panoramic views of the mountains as well as access restaurants, cafes and short hiking trails. Once you’re back down in Banff, we recommend warming up with some delicious hot chocolate and marshmallows beside a cosy fire on the Waldhaus Pub patio - the perfect winter treat! Who will you spend a magical day in the mountains with?
