One of my petal beakers, newly available on my online store! This one is made from white stoneware and hand painted with Bennett’s filtered stoneware. I love the contrast of the natural clay colours.
You can find this one on shop.maddiedeereceramics.com under Beakers. Head on over for a closer look 👀😍😘
Today’s #30dayhomelove challenge is “vintage” and I have no shortage of pieces I’ve picked up over the years as I just love a mix of old and new. However, this photo showcases a couple of my favourites; the rocking horse and the fruit crates. I found Sally, as our rocking horse has always been known, at the Camberwell Markets about 15 years ago. I was wandering around, heavily pregnant with child #4 and frankly in a bit of a daze, and stopped to admire her. In what turned out to be my best bargaining ever, the stall holder kept bringing the price down and down, although in the beginning my excuses about “just looking” were absolutely genuine. In the end, he practically paid me to take her away and she has provided many happy hours of rocking toddlers since. The vintage fruit crates were an extremely spontaneous and random buy from eBay and may have caused a few confused looks from the rest of the family when 50 of them were delivered a couple of days later! What you see here is only a fraction of the ones I have all lined up behind the tv, displaying lots of my favourite white objects including vintage vases and items my children have made. What vintage pieces do you have at home and do they have a story behind them too? I’d love to know. Clare xx @decor8@myscandinavianhome#mondocherry#ourhomes#vintagestyle

Today is lake-making day! Here is the process, illustrated in stories:
For each liter of weak dye liquor from exhausting your plant material, you’ll add 10 grams alum and 5 grams soda ash. (That means for each quart dye, add 2 tsp alum and 1 tsp soda ash). If you have a strongly colored dye, multiply the recipe by 2 or 3.
▫️Put your dye liquor in a clear bucket or pot at least 3x the volume of the dye
▫️Boil some water
▫️ Dissolve your alum in a small amount of hot water (both aluminum sulfate and aluminum potassium sulfate work)
▫️Mix alum solution into dye
▫️Dissolve your soda ash in a small amount of hot water
▫️Slowly add the soda ash solution to the dye, stirring all the while. Gradually! Or it will overflow!
▫️The mixture will effervesce, releasing carbon dioxide. It will turn opaque as aluminum hydroxide forms, adsorbs the dye colorant, and slowly begins to precipitate
▫️You can check that the pH is neutral with litmus paper. Add a little acidic alum or alkaline soda ash to adjust
▫️As the lake pigment settles, the liquid above should be nearly clear. If it’s still strongly colored, not enough aluminum hydroxide was formed to hold the colorants. Repeat the recipe.
▫️Let the pigment settle for one day
It’s important not to add too much of the alum + soda ash, as the aluminum hydroxide they create is colorless on its own, and will give you a pale pigment. So though it’s tricky to estimate how much dye is in solution, it’s best to start with a small amount and add more as needed.
Good luck to those of you participating in the #lakealong ! #lakepigment#naturalpalette#buckthorn#slowcraft#makealake#naturalpigment
