Took me a while to finish this piece, and honestly I'm glad I didn't try to finish this in a rush. Everyday with my babies gives me inspiration, being a mother makes me feel on top of the world and at the same time I feel one with the world. ❤ I couldn't have finished this without my man @tonyacencion1216 I love you so much amor 🌹❤ #mothernature#motherhood#artsyfartsy#naturesart#lovequotes
I had to be strong for this one - what a specimen. An unreal 6.3 kg crystal of Spodumene from Kanakar Pegmatite, Darai Paech, Nuristan, Afghanistan, mined in May 2019. Nuristan has produced some of the finest spodumene and ‘kunzite’ specimens but this one is fantastic for its transparent gem-quality whilst being one of the largest I have ever seen. Typical striated tabular crystal with beautiful twinned ‘herringbone’ growth pattern on the apex. Looking from front top-right, the real observant among you may pick out a thin silvery reflective ribbon-like spiral inclusion that twists along the twin-plane through the crystal, amazing! But oh my, the other stand-out feature is the pleochroism .. what?! Very rare, you don’t often get this purplish-blue colour and so ‘deeply’ saturated. Spodumene is LiAlSi₂O₆ with Iron and manganese substituting for Al and Si, we can get some variety of colours which can be pretty unstable and further enhanced with irradiation removing electrons from Manganese with further irradiation producing coupled oxidation reactions with Iron giving greens, which all can be reversed on exposure to UV or moderate heat. But blue? Not much information out there, but I remember collecting a sample from California straight out of the mine and it was a lovely bluish colour that I kept in the dark to retain it. Perhaps this one being recently mined has kept its ‘hidden secret’ now revealed and with the nuances of colour centres, might indeed be stable. It is such an incredible sight to behold!
