Taqueado Jaqués style Ornamentation of the Apse, Monasterio de Santa María y San Pedro de Alaón, Huesca, Aragon, Spain

The Jaqués taqueado or “checkerboard” style of architectural ornamentation is typical of Romanesque churches on the Camino de Santiago at the end of the 11th century. Although this type of light & shadow checkered pattern is related to a chessboard, the term “taqueado jaqués” is derived from the fact that it is representative of the influential decoration of the cathedral of Jaca, from where the motif spread widely along the Camino.
Santa María de Alaón is a former Benedictine abbey, and briefly a Cluniac priory, near Sopeira in the Pyrenean county of Ribagorza, Aragon. It shelters beneath an imposing rocky massif on the banks of the Noguera Ribagorzana river, which forms the natural border between Aragon and Catalonia downstream of the spectacular Escales gorge.
It was established in the late 11th or early 12th century over a 6th or 7th century Visigothic foundation which is still visible in the crypt. It was first documented in the early 9th century, when the territory belonged to the Hispanic March of the Carolingian Empire, the military buffer zone established by Charlemagne in 795 as a defensive barrier between the Umayyad Moors of Al-Andalus and the Frankish Empire. A Muslim raid by Abd al Malik, son of Almanzor, in 1006 did not completely destroy the monastery, but there were many captives whose ransom the monastery had to pay, along with large taxes ongoing. Further complications in the life of the monastery ensued when it was absorbed into the domain of the Kingdom of Pamplona. In 1023 Sancho III of Pamplona introduced the Frankish rule of the Cluniac reform in all the Benedictine monasteries of Aragon. Later, again in the hands of the Benedictines, it was rebuilt and reconsecrated in 1123. Happily though, the Cluniac influence left a lasting architectural legacy to create a new type of Pyrenean-Lombard-Romanesque fusion.
