Sitting on the south shore of Breiðafjörður (literally Wide Fjord) is the town of Stykkishólmur—one of my favourite townships in Iceland.
A visit to Stykkishólmur can be for many reasons, all of which are exciting in their own right. The town serves as a fantastic base for exploring Snæfellsnes (the large peninsula on whose north side sits this seaside town), while also doubling as the gateway to the Westfjords if opting for the highly recommended choice of arriving by boat.
Of course you could also drive around Breiðafjörður, but the view from the Stykkishólmur-Brjánslækur ferry is hard to pass up, as it plies its way between the fjord’s many islands, affording glimpses of whales and puffins along the way.
Lastly, my favourite reason to visit Stykkishólmur might just be the food. Located adjacent to the harbour is Hafnarvagninn, a food truck serving the best fish and chips I’ve had anywhere on this planet. The fish is fresh and the batter arrives daily from the town’s bakery. I’m not kidding when I say this food truck has literally ruined fish and chips for me. Nothing else has ever even come close.
On the road to Landmannalaugar, I took a bus and stop in the middle of nowhere, literally! You have brunt grass everywhere, the landscape change step by step and I started to be surrounded by orange colour. You’ll see Landmannalaugar soon, it’s incre, trust me.
