This photo was taken just moments before something terrifying happened!
We were at the beach in Port Barton in the Philippines, when we saw a tiny island made of sand in the middle of the ocean. We decided to rent kayaks and paddle out to it. Jane was not as strong in her arms, so it was mainly Ryan who did all the hard work.
It must have been at least a kilometer away from the main land and took more than half an hour but we made it. We noticed instantly how blue and clear the water was. And everywhere we looked, we could see colourful starfish. We were in paradise!
Suddenly, out of nowhere, we saw really big grey clouds. We misjudged the wind and thought it was moving away from us. But just moments later, we were hit with heavy wind and rain. We were surrounded by thunder and lightning! We could barely see the main land because of the heavy rain!
We had to paddle all the way back to the beach with our METAL paddles. Jane was freaking out!
We paddled as hard as we could back towards the main land. We paddled so hard that it must’ve took us just half the time it took to get there. When we finally reached the main land, Jane was purple, exhausted and shaking. But mostly relieved!
Thinking back to this day makes us laugh every time. What an adventure!

How’s the rainy season in El Nido, Palawan?
That’s a question that we often get. From our experience, it’s extremely unpredictable. It can rain for 4 days straight and then be sunny for 4 days. The rainy season is from June to September and the locals say that we have been lucky this year. The majority of the weeks have had many periods of sun and it was actually better in July than it was in May and June which is weird because July and August are supposed to have the heaviest rain.
Every year is different though. We heard that 2019 was very bad compared to what we’ve seen of 2020.
Would we recommend traveling to El Nido during this period? If you can choose to come during the dry season (October-May) we would suggest you to do so, but if you can’t we think it’s better to visit El Nido in the rain than not visiting it at all 😂 and you may be lucky and have some sunny days.

El Nido is definitely a town that we will take forever in our hearts. We’ve been through so many uncertainties (especially in the beginning of the lockdown) but the beauty of this place has always brought us peace. We can see ourselves in the future telling our kids and grandkids about this special place and this unique moment of our lives.
