Can you plan and hike Alta Via 1 on your own?! YES! Save this post because we are sharing here all the resources you need to plan your ultimate Alta Via 1 long distance hike! ⬇️
1. Guidebook "The Dolomites Alta Via n.1" by Italo Zandonella Callegher - it has very detailed info on the trail, available for a free download right here: https://rifugios.net/av1.pdf
2. Cicerone guidebook - this one is widely recognized as a great resource across several hiking forums. We tried to find one online and in stores and ended up not getting it. The first guidebook on the list totally did the job, so you may be fine without Cicerone guidebook too if you get the first guidebook and Tabacco map.
3. Maps: Tabacco app, sections 001E, E02E, 001F, E02F, 001G, E02G, 001H, E02H, 001I, E02I, 001J, E02J,E02K. We opted for getting the app and downloading the sections for several reasons: it doesn't require Internet connection once downloaded, it is cheaper (each section costs $2.79 which is cheaper than buying a paper version), it doesn't take up space, it has a GPS built-in, so you can see yourself on the map (good luck with paper map). Just make sure not to deplete your phone's battery or try not to lose it😆
4. Interactive Map of Rifugios - sweet tool that allows you to visualize the route and see the rifugios alongside it. This tool was essential for booking the overnight stays at rifugios: http://rifugios.net/alta-via-1.html
5. Tripadvisor - since not all rifugios are created equal, check Tripadvisor for reviews and photos, it will help you to choose the best one (if there are several rifugios in the area).
6.Super detailed packing list - we combed through all existing packing lists for hiking in the Dolomites and created our own for hiking in summer season. Let us know in comments if you want it.
7. Our itinerary - we customized the trail for 9 hiking days and 1 rest day, starting at Lago di Braies and exiting a little bit before Belluno. Let us know if you want it.
8. Buses: check out Cortina Express, FlixBus and ATVO buses to get from Venice airport to Cortina d'Ampezzo.
10. Train: we took Trenitalia train from Belluno back to Venice.
The future remains uncertain and so it should, for it is the canvas upon which we paint our desires. Thus always the human condition faces a beautifully empty canvas. We possess only this moment in which to dedicate ourselves continuously to the sacred presence which we share and create. ~ Frank Herbert
The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel – an adapted farmhouse – has provided an emotional and physical base from which bold adventures could begin and a horrid-weather sanctuary from ages past. Raven Crag, the biggest buttress above the hotel, was the scene of my very first V Diff rock climb 50 years ago!
Mark Richards has been walking in the Lake District for many many years. In his new Walking the Lake District Fells he offers a comprehensive collection of fells and routes based around key valleys. One of the first new Fellranger books covers Langdale, Ambleside and Grasmere and here he shares some of his favourite images from the guidebook.

How many times did happen to you that you’d like to be in the mountains but instead you’re stuck in the city?
This is what is happening to us right now, so we take comfort in those summer poctures!
Proof that I’m not always photogenic.🤪🤯😲 .
One thing I’m great at is sharing my fitness accountability with you guys - and if it wasn’t for my accountability I know for sure that I would have given up long ago. This isn’t a fad for me, this WORKS. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t something you can just keep giving up on. You need to 𝒹𝑒𝒸𝒾𝒹𝑒 WHY you want to live a healthier lifestyle and stay accountable. That is why I have a secure online Challenge group that I run through a secure app to help you stay accountable. Another reason why I have been so successful on my journey is because since I made that commitment, the internal and external changes that have transformed me, have 𝒸𝒽𝒶𝓃𝑔𝑒𝒹 𝓂𝓎 𝓁𝒾𝒻𝑒 and I know for a fact I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for this incredible community. .
So for those of you who are doubtful about trying this, what do you seriously have to lose? Are you going to sit there and watch the next two and a months go by and be in the same place three months from now? Or are you going to actually do something about it? .
I used to watch from the outside and I was nervous as hell when I decided to go all in because I was prepping for a major hip surgery at the time - but after losing 7 lbs in just the first ten days and gaining so much energy and sleeping better - you 𝒸𝒶𝓃 𝓃𝑜𝓉 discount the value of the life you will gain from this. .
It’s time for you to experience this for yourself, because I’m not going anywhere, but will be by your side to help guide you through this. Life is meant to be 𝓁𝒾𝓋𝑒𝒹 𝒫𝒶𝓈𝓈𝒾𝑜𝓃𝒶𝓉𝑒𝓁𝓎 — and it’s time you experience that for yourself. .
I’m look to work closely with only ten more ladies. Link in my bio for the October Bootcamp/Challenge Group - and for those who want to earn Christmas in cash, click on the Coach link in my bio and fill out the form. Do you realize you could turn your dream of working from home into a reality with this? 🥰🥳🤯

Fall sunrise atop 울산바위 (Ulsanbawi Rock), Seoraksan National Park, South Korea
In Korean folklore, the Creator assembled all the beautiful rocks across Korea to Geumgangsan — a mountain thought to be at the center of the universe where the spiritual and earthly worlds interacted. Ulsan Rock left his home in the far south of Korea eager to become one of Geumgangsan’s 12,000 peaks. However, before Ulsan arrived, he learned that all the peaks had already been formed. In embarrassment and defeat, Ulsan Rock settled for the night in the Seorak area. Upon finding the place so serene and beautiful, he decided to stay there permanently instead of making the return journey home.

Took these guys out on their first backpacking trip up to Divide lake. Nothing beats getting out among the fall leaves and watching new experiences unfold . .
🏔🏔🏔 We visited Lassen in the beginning of August. There was still so much snow on the ground we had to raincheck a few hikes because we didn’t have the proper gear. Time to get some trekking poles and spikes because this crazy weather isn’t going anywhere! ⠀
Thoughts on poles? Yay or nay?⠀
🌞 Atsugewi land
I know I’ve been a little quiet on here the past few days, but I needed to take a little break from social media to allow myself to regain some energy. I also spent a little time in the woods this past weekend and that also helped.
But I want to say a very special THANK YOU to each and every one of you who have left such kind comments. You have absolutely no idea how MUCH your love and support means to me - especially with sharing something so personal and vulnerable. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤️
En dag i skogen.

(Up)rooted sculpture 🌳
Some of the PNW beaches I explored had such interesting and beautiful driftwood, like this incredible piece that used to be a tree’s roots. The driftwood come from fallen trees that wash downriver, into the ocean and then ashore onto beaches. Grown, shaped, stripped, smoothed, and bleached by the forces of nature into something so aesthetically pleasing and visually intriguing.
So do you consider something like this “art”? Just a philosophical question I find interesting… 🎨
blurred lines, shifting reflections
More and more, I’m appreciating and accepting the ambiguities. In perception, in emotion, in myself, in life. There can be a lot of beauty and freedom in those spaces.
