For most people, when they have a pet, they consider them part of the family and for most that means caring for and protecting them like family. Having pet insurance means you can make the best decisions for your pets, even when they can’t do it themselves. Interested in learning more about pet insurance? Today is National Check the Chip Day! Microchips help reunite lost/stolen pets with their families, but a microchip only works if its registration information is accurate. Here’s how you can take advantage of National Check the Chip Day - - -
1. make an appointment with your vet for microchipping if your pet isn’t already microchipped
2. check your already-microchipped pet’s registration info to make sure it’s up-to-date. - - -
Some of you know that I have a few persistent health issues. My pawrents struggled for years to find an answer for my “nighttime heckins” which turned out to be mild, non-convulsive sleep cycle associated seizures. On top of that, I recently started coughing for no real reason. My family took me to my regular vet and a speciality vet who found that connective tissue on one size of my lungs is weak, so I have a persistent cough that’s mostly triggered by activity.
Veterinary care is expensive. My family never would have been able to afford my numerous consultations and treatments if they didn’t have pet health insurance. Thanks to @gohealthypaws I have always been able to get the care, procedures, and medicine that I need to feel my best. It’s so important to get health insurance for your pets. Start early while they’re young and healthy, because just like with human insurance, pet insurance also won’t cover preexisting conditions. I’ve had #healthypawspetinsurance since the day I was adopted!
We have a lot to smile about! Remember Mila’s ER visit a few weeks ago from when her primary medical servant @aca6852 was out of town? She had been vomiting once a day for three days so I was worried that she had a cat poop or cow ear obstruction! We went to MedVet on a Saturday, and had a full check up, with x-rays and a blood panel. Obviously, she was totally fine, but the bill was $660 since it was a weekend ER trip! Thankfully, her @Trupanion health insurance came through! We got a direct deposit refunded for $481.70 within 2 weeks! Insurance doesn’t cover exam costs, so they effectively covered 90% of the actual procedures, which is priceless. Now this ended up not being a major crisis, but if M had needed emergency GI surgery, the cost would have been a nightmare for me. Getting her insurance is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’m constantly going on and on about it to everyone I know, and I have no connection to the company and do not get anything from evangelizing. 😂 I’m like a walking advertisement for them because I’ve been so happy with their service so far. Also I JUST found out that they offer a new add-on plan that covers behavioral modification, physical therapy, water therapy, acupuncture etc. I immediately added this because PT is expensive, and bullies are prone to CCL tears! Anyway, if you don’t have insurance for your pup, check out Trupanion ASAP. (Again I have no connection to the company, and this is NOT a paid post - just our truth). 🦈💜 #MilaOfTroy#PetHealthInsurance#AdoptTheCropped PS - snood = by @sookieandivy 💚
One day Yangkyu came to me with a brochure and said pet insurance would be a good investment for Piri's future. He was 9 when he enrolled and his ASPCA insurance started to really pay off when he had kidney disease. All of his many blood works, lactated ringers were almost fully covered. It was amazing. Unfortunately we didn't read the fine lines carefully and didn't realize his condition would become pre-existing after his plan renewed (thankfully he was diagnosed when his plan renewed and so we had a full year of coverage before it became pre-existing). Still we saved so much that first year. Later when he had cancer his treatments again were mostly covered. Even though he met the yearly claim quota quickly (cancer treatments are expensive), insurance came through, including for all his ER visits.
Bartles came to us at the age of 12 with early stage kidney disease and Cushing's Disease. Why did we enroll him with pre-existing conditions? Because there will always be ER visits and other illnesses. Bartles was enrolled at HealthyPaws and his acupuncture treatments, ER visits and a thyroid condition which he developed later were all partially covered.
Lady was too old to enroll with HealthyPaws when she came to us at 14 but we found another great company called PetsBest. They don't have an enrollment age cap. We were paying nearly $100 a month but because she was so healthy and galloping around like a teenager Yangkyu thought maybe we could cancel and save the $100 on the side. It sounded like an ok idea but I insisted we keep her insurance and when she suddenly fell ill her hospital bill came out to almost $8000. If we didn't have health insurance we would have be in debt still trying to pay it off.
Momo and Noah are both enrolled in PetsBest. Some may think pet insurance is not worth it for them for various reasons (maybe pet is young and people think they are not susceptible to illnesses or ER visits - if so there should still be emergency savings planned - or people don’t want to pursue harsh or invasive treatments for their old dog) but for us they have been more helpful than not. And it makes sense. For all pets.
