A few weeks back, I decided to see for myself what Jeremy Clarkson meant when he said "you can’t be a true petrolhead until you’ve owned an Alfa Romeo". It was just an offhand comment on his old car show, but it seemed to have stuck on the minds of many petrolheads - including mine. The idea here, for non-car fans, is that you are taking on Alfas' woeful reliability record in the name of getting a cool, pretty car with tons of character.
But of course, being a not-rich non-boomer in Singapore required me to rent instead of getting one. Turns out that there aren't many Alfas around but I was lucky enough to find this rather beat-up 159.
Though I had it for only two weeks, I kind of get what Clarkson meant. Within this short stint, I managed to pay the workshop a visit for faulty rear lights and towards the end, the car began to shudder whenever the 2nd or 3rd gear was engaged. It drank fuel like a bitch too. But then I looked at it, and I don't think I can get over at how pretty it looks. It's so beautifully proportioned and against the current onslaught of over-designed cars, its clean, elegant lines stands the test of time.
It's true. Buying a car in Singapore is the most irrational and fiscally-unwise decision you can ever make. So while you're at it, why not go for the most irrational and fiscally-unwise car. Sometime in the future for me perhaps.
Bugatti Aérolithe´ … Art Deco (2+2a-2i) 💙✈️💙
(1935, Bugatti Type 57 Aérolithe/Atlantic Coupé (Recreation, owned by/based at “The Strøjer Samlingen aka “The Strojer Collection”, on Funen, Denmark) ... The short story – extracts: Jean Bugatti was the eldest son of company founder Ettore Bugatti, and by the early 1930s was penning most of the company’s body designs. To modernise the boutique automaker, Jean created the Type 57, which would be built in standard and lowered chassis, and would serve as the basis for everything from luxury touring cars to racing cars and show cars, like the stunning 1935 Bugatti Aerolithe concept.
The Aérolithe Coupé debuted at the 1935 Paris Auto Salon, and featured a body crafted from a magnesium and aluminium alloy known as Elektron. Typically used in the construction of aircraft, Elektron consisted of 90-percent magnesium and 10-percent aluminum, which made it both light and strong (up to one third the weight of aluminum), but also highly flammable thus welding was not possible. This meant that each panel had to be riveted into place which posed a particular problem for traditional design. Therefore, Jean incorporated the rivet’s aesthetic into the wings of the car and created a telling combination of function and form.
So ... to join panels, Jean specified an external vertical seam, which (as mentioned) would be riveted to join left and right body halves. This spine ran the length of the car, and the design was mirrored on front and rear fenders as well.
When the Aérolithe Coupé concept was translated into the limited-production Aero Coupé, the Elektron skin was though replaced by aluminum. Despite this, the riveted dorsal spine construction method carried over, becoming one of the car’s most distinctive traits. Two were completed by the fall of 1936, but in December of 1936 Jean received tragic news ... a close friend and pioneering aviator, Jean Mermoz, who was the first to fly across the South Atlantic, had perished in a plane crash at sea. From this point forward, the cars were renamed from Aero Coupé to Atlantic Coupé, in honor of Mermoz’s memory and record-setting achievement).
