International Social Service-USA's staff (from left to right) Alanna Hays, Hannah Pursley, Elaine Weisman, Morgan Drayton, Ema Makas and Katrina Clemons attended a conference, “In Children’s Best Interests: Advancing a Fundamental Standard for the Treatment of Immigrant Children,” last week at American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL), in Washington D.C. “The conference, sponsored by the AU Center for Latin American & Latino Studies, AUWCL, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), addressed the best interest standard, which has served to safeguard the well-being of children in the U.S. for over a century, regardless of immigration status.” On the first day of the conference, U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal gave the keynote address.

Tanzania's National Oral Health Survey Begins: Over the past 14 months, MC-Tanzania has been quietly but diligently working with stakeholders to launch Tanzania’s 5th National Oral Health Survey. The project aims to provide an in-depth assessment similar to a census report on oral health conditions, diseases, and associated dental health factors amongst Tanzanians. Oral health is nuanced and affects nutrition, physical well-being, and overall health. The National Oral Health Care Survey began January 24, 2020, with training District Dental Officers who serve as data collectors and will be traveling across the Southern Zone regions of Tanzania first before making their way across the rest of the country over the next several months. #tanzania#education#science#oralhealth#mcwohc#globalhealth#diseases#tanzania#leadership#census#publichealth#outreach#research#policy

When Alfie gives me those puppy dog eyes he normally gets exactly what he wants. Wonder if it’ll work the same for me
A gentle reminder of the cancellation policy
Totally understand that things crop up and emergencies happen but please as far as possible provide 24hrs notice if you are unable to attend your appointment
I’m currently operating a waiting list and advance notice allows me to contact someone from this list and help them with their recovery a little faster
A charge is also applied when less than 24hrs notice is provided as, despite best efforts, I am unlikely to be able to fill the slot with a short timeframe. This is detailed in the confirmation email you receive at the time of booking as well as the reminder email you receive the day before your session. You can also cancel your appointment directly from this and I’ll be notified
It’s hard work running a one woman show! The little extra notice helps make my life just that little bit easier
Thank you as always for your continued support and understanding 🧘🏼♀️🙏🏼
Now back to not getting distracted by the puppy!

No schválne, koľkí by ste ju volili?! :)
Prajem pekný piatok

CHANGING THE FOOD SYSTEM?
🤔Changing the food system so that it’s more healthful, sustainable and equitable is pretty damn hard. Often because there are just so many different players involved when it comes to food. Got a metabolism? That pretty much makes you a stakeholder 🤷♀️. .
🧐Although this is why nutrition is such an endlessly fascinating& interdisciplinary topic ( #obvsbiased ), it’s also partly why despite there being a fair amount of evidence as to what our general direction of travel ought to be, there’s not a huge amount of change happening.
🌎The trade offs between different interests and groups makes change tricksy. Some musings I’ve been having on the topic of trade offs when it comes to nutrition....
🐟Fish. Super nutritious, with most of the so called ‘blue zones’ (those parts of the world with lots of centenarians) consuming diets high in fish. Most national dietary guidelines recommend fish, with the UK recommending 2 portions a week; 1 being oily fish. But although we know there’d probably be health benefits if everyone ate more fish, stocks are currently severely overfished with knock on impacts for the environment & biodiversity. (Top tip: look for the @mscecolabel if buying fish).
🍭Regulation. Regulating the very large food companies that tend to make more money the less nutritious their food is seems like a no brainer. Particularly given that they spend vast sums on advertising which don’t really leave us with a level playing field (just 1.2% of all food&drink advertising goes on veg). But given the vast numbers of people employed by the food industry, you can see why politicians are reluctant to do so. Plus, let’s not forget that these processed foods are often a boon for the working parent, and have improved food safety over the past few decades.
💵Pricing. Food has never been cheaper as a % of total income, with many arguing that the true environmental + production cost of certain foods should be reflected in their price, with producers paid a fairer price. But if prices go up, what does that mean for equitable access to food, given that 820 million people globally don’t have enough to eat as it is?

Word of mouth marketing can be summed up in a single word: Trust. People trust other people, which means people are more likely to buy when they hear it from their friend or consumer.
This masterpiece 'Contagious: Why Things Catch On' by Jonah Berger reveals the secret behind word of mouth and social transmission.
Discover how six basic principles drive all sorts of things to become contagious, from consumer products and policy initiatives to services and ideas within organizations.
Last night was amazing! Thank you to everyone who attended our Mental Health of Color Meet Up.
In these spaces we are able to explore the barriers, stigmas, and limitations people of color face as it pertains to mental health. As a community we brainstorm ways to normalize mental health conversations, destigmatize the illness, and begin the healing process within our communities and beyond.
Last night, we had special guest, State Representative @replizmiranda . Our CEO @dr.pilartucker interviewed her on ways she’s encountered mental health challenges in her line of work, interventions she’s used to overcome or cope with those challenges and legislation that is being developed to improve those challenges.
Safe to say, our state representative did a phenomenal job at being honest, vulnerable, present and powerful. We were educated and elevated. We were triggered but safe. She provided facts, stats, and truth.
We all identified ways we could show up in the world and use our individual power to enhance the mental state and wellbeing of the communities we come from, live in, serve and love .
We made mental health great, safe and real.
Been pretty busy the past few weeks, working on a ton of school stuff. I'm excited to announce that I've officially received a grant from my college to attend the Eastern Sociological Society Annual Meeting, where I'll be presenting my original research on LGBTQ+ identity in college athletics!
This research, sparked primarily by my own experiences as a trans athlete within the @ncaa, is the first step in a call to action to create more inclusive policies and legislation when it comes to diversity, equity, and inclusion
We are here, we matter, and we belong in sport✊🏼💙🏳️🌈
