📸 Foto: CNN
Taken this one very literally and gone for two gin based cocktails that owe their creation to the roaring 20s and prohibition.
Turning my apartment into a speakeasy... and its allowed me to overlay some electro-swing to today’s video, and don the waistcoat and cap! (Sound on 🔊) Also happens that these two are ultra refreshing on a day like today.
Gin Rickey -
Based on the original bourbon cocktail from the late 1800s, Colonel Joe Rickey asked barman George A Williamson to make him something special, and so lime and soda was added to his measure of Bourbon. Bathtub gin was more readily available during the prohibition, and so the Gin Rickey was born. Popularised by F. Scott Fitzgerald who’s affection for the cocktail was made apparent in The Great Gatsby.
Highball glass filled with ice, 2 measures of gin, one of lime juice, topped with soda. Lime wheels to garnish.
The South side fizz -
Al Capone and his crew were believed to have produced a bathtub gin that had quite a sharp bite in the South Side of Chicago. As a means of sweetening the flavour, and make it more delectable, the South Side fizz was born.
3 parts gin, 1 part sugar syrup, 1 part lemon juice, muddled mint leaves. Shaken until ice cold. Into a glass with crushed ice, and topped with soda water. Mint leaves to garnish.
We all welcome the announcement to move to lockdown level 3, and to reopen liquor sales & deliveries on June 1st.

My friends @bennyamis@girlinthevalley@smweducator and I wanted to throw an adventureparty. We planned and schemed and landed on a Prohibition theme. We wrote a story, worked out the locations and scheduled it just in time for my 35th birthday. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We looked so beautiful. @screenburn played a hobo, @smweducator played a dirty cop and the rest of us giggled, knowing our friends were running around town solving puzzles and finding clues. We landed at Farmstead for fancy ham sandwiches and birthday desserts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Thanks for following along with these happy memories from our time in St. Helena - we're excited to make new ones in Wisconsin.
On this day in Norwood history, a liquor raid was conducted at the store of James Burke, located at 175 Railroad Avenue, better known today as the Shamrock Pub.
No word on what the punishment was for Mr Burke, but the raid at his home resulted in fines in today's dollars of around $7500 for Toufie Bader and $9000 for Joseph Yourguliswicz.

Cider is coming... Day 58 of Lockdown
Some homebrewing fun on Saturday 😜
It's been a very educational, fun and occasionally frightening experience. Also, lots and lots and lots and lots of sanitising 😂
Alcohol ban to be lifted 1 June! 🥂🥳 I would whip out some champers and a party hat, but the last of the champagne was poured roughly 6 weeks into lockdown, to celebrate a particularly sunny autumn Sunday. This bottle of Comtesse Alexia, a gift from lovely @velvdl, was the perfect afternoon bubbles - an exquisite explosion of shortbread and apple. I will definitely be drinking some more in the near future (one week to go!), although I’ll be sticking to some South African bubbles to start. I encourage you all, South African or otherwise, to support our local wine industry. Not only are SA wines super delicious, but lockdown has been a huge trial to an industry that provides many jobs and is of great cultural relevance. The best part is that support is fun - just pour some SA wine! 😉🇿🇦 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #lockdown#prohibition#southafricanwine#champagne#comtessealexia#comtessealexiachampagne#brut#bubbles#champers#fizz#brutchampagne@champagnealexandrebonnet

On this day in 1925 the violent Chicago-based Sicilian mobster Angelo Genna was killed at the age of 27 in a Mafia shoot out against Chicago’s North Side Gang, over the death of Dean O’Banion in 1924. Angelo was one of 6 brothers and the head of the Genna crime family during the Prohibition Era. After his death in 1925 the remaining members were absorbed into the Chicago Outfit. On May 25th Bugs Moran, Vincent Drucci and Hymie Weiss chased down Genna until his car crashed into a light pole. The North Side car stopped alongside the accident and then pumped several bullets into Genna as he lay behind the wheel of his crumpled car.
RSA Lockdown, Level 4, Day 24: I could finally put my internal alarm clock to good use. Woke up at 07:40 and we actually went for a sanctioned walk. I had one naturesque photo but it’s way too blurry and apparently I have standards. I’m very unfit and everything around me is uphill. Came home and made us flapjacks. Recipe and guidance provided by @maunderized – it is the winning recipe and I will only make this one henceforth.
Roommate went for a ride to the shops and I watched some telly. I felt tired. Had a call with @zenren_ct who health coached me. She made me feel good about myself while also giving me top tips to be even better! She is on her way to be an excellent health coach. So warm and supportive. I was happy to be the first client!
Roommate came home and we made more Turkish bread. So tasty! He fixed cupboard doors and took out the trash and I cleaned the kitchen and bin and put in a load of washing. Writing this makes me gasp at the domesticity. But it is what it is. We are stuck in the domicile 🤷🏻♀️
Roommate napped and I watched more TV until we were ready for cards. I lost. Lockdown Tournament score is: 13–12. Ugh. We eat donuts and decide to binge Breaking Bad until The President’s Speech. High fives for moving to Level 3 with the rest of the country! High fives for opening the economy! High fives for booze and free-range exercise! Sorry about the cigs, smokers. Shame.
More Breaking Bad. So glad I’m FINALLY finishing it. That just took about one million years.
Reading. Sleeping. Storming. Washing line blown over, whole kitchen is wet. Bathroom is wet. Blinds rattle everywhere. Roommate sleeps through it all because earplugs 🙄
Screenshots from last night’s all-star livestream & 5th episode of our weekly QUARANTINE SPEAKEASY! We’re still accepting donations thru Tuesday and as always is split amongst the performers. Join us next Saturday !
Happy #NationalBeerDay ! 🍻 #Onthisday in 1933, the country enacted the Cullen–Harrison Act, which allowed for beer to be consumed which contained up to 4.05% by volume (instead of the near-beer at 0.5% which was mandated for the LONG 13 years of Prohibition). President Roosevelt, as he signed the act, supposedly said, “I think this would be a good time for a beer.” People began lining up outside of breweries the night before in preparation (April 6th is referred to as New Beer's Eve 🤣). In the first 24 hours, 1.5 million barrels were consumed. This act redefined an "intoxicating beverage", but it was not until December of the same year that Prohibition was fully repealed. ⠀
Despite this photo not including architecture and/or a streetscape, it is one of our favorites from the @nyhistory collection! This is a group of friends drinking (dramatically) at the Munchen Hofbrau at Broadway and 30th Street. 🍺💛⠀
TAG a friend you wish you could have a beer with tonight! Perhaps you can, over Zoom, FaceTime, etc. ⠀

Happy Repeal Day! (It can still be celebrated in isolation, I think?) Here’s the poster I made for @summitbeer to commemorate the 87th Anniversary of the Repeal of Prohibition. These will be available through Summit whenever things start to get back to normal, printed by the wizards over at @brlsq Summit will also be giving some away through their page, so head on over if you’d like to nab one!
Beyond that, I hope you are doing well, staying safe at home, and washing your hands. Be as nice to everyone as you can in these strange times 🙃
