New Delhi's most iconic and popular tourist spot is the "Qutub Minar". It is a 73 metres (239.5 feet) tall tapering tower of five stories, with a 14.3 metres (47 feet) base diameter, reducing to 2.7 metres (9 feet) at the top. It has a spiral staircase of 379 steps within, from base to the top. One could climb right to the top for an aerial view, but later it was limited to only the first storey. This too was closed following a stampede on December 04, 1981. Qutub Minar is an UNESCO World Heritage site.
The construction of Qutub Minar was started in 1192 AD by 'Qutubuddin Aibak', founder of the Delhi Sultanate, over the ruins of 'Lal Kot', the citadel of Dhillika. In 1220, Aibak's successor and son-in-law Shamsuddin Iltutmish completed a further three storeys. In 1369, a bolt of lightning struck and destroyed the top storey. Firoz Shah Tughlaq replaced the damaged storey, and added one more. On 1 September 1803, a major earthquake caused serious damage. Major Robert Smith of the British Indian Army renovated the tower in 1828 and installed a pillared cupola over the fifth storey, thus creating a sixth. The cupola was taken down in 1848, under instructions from The Viscount Hardinge, then Governor General of India. It was reinstalled at ground level to the east of Qutb Minar, where it remains and is known as "Smith's Folly". A very popular hindi film song "Dil Ka Bhanwar Kare Pukar" from the 1963 film "Tere Ghar Ke Samne' was shot by actor-director Dev Anand wooing Nutan inside Qutub Minar. However, the cameras in that era were too big to fit inside the tower's narrow passage, and therefore the song was shot inside a replica of the Qutub Minar. #qutubminar#unesco#delhitourism#newdelhi#india#bharat#qutubuddinaibak#slavedynasty#delhisultanat#iltutmish#firozshahtughlaq#devanand#nutan#dilkabhanwarkarepukar#teregharkesamne#hindifilm#ilovemyindia 🇮🇳 #suniluke
Have studied about this Worlds tallest brick minaret all along in History. Got to see it finally.
Must say, I could exactly relate to what I studied years ago- The Splendid Qutub Minar 😃 "People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing -- that's why we recommend it daily." -Zig Ziglar
Sadly, the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque was commissioned by Qutub-Ud-Din Aibak, founder of the Mamluk or Slave dynasty and built using the ruins of 27 Jain temples. These temples were plundered by the Muslim invaders to get stone and material for their mosques and different buildings.
The Qutub Minar stands on the ruins of these beautiful temples today, one of the proofs are these temple bells carved on pillars, signifying the origin of being a Hindu temple primarily.

And we continue to enlighten the young curious minds in our collaboration with the Pearl Academy. The students visited Qutub Minar, as a part of their Open classroom programme and got to experience the historic stories told in an interactive way with our audio-guided tour.
Here the students get to gather experiences outside the typical four-walls classroom setup.
