I just heard the terribly sad news that Amos, my favourite farmer has passed away. Amos worked closely with the lovely guys at @swaledalefoods in #Skipton and as you will see here had the best office in the world. I / we met Amos a few times in the last few years for my @Cultisan project. Luckily one meeting included spending a day with him filming and interviewing him. I was so looking forward to spending more time with him next year and sharing his wonderful warmth, insight and #Yorkshire wit with more people and I’m sad I didn’t get moving sooner to make that happen. I’m now rushing through footage to edit a film together to serve as a tribute to this loveliest of men. So happy I got to meet him. Love to all at @swaledalefoods. This is a clip of me and him doing our tribute to Morecambe and Wise. Rest in peace Amos, you were one of life’s good ‘uns. #farmer#thebest#northyorkshire#tribute#swaledale#swaledalefoods#rarebreed#rbst#slowfood
We have the pleasure of working with hundreds of chickens and quail here on our farm/hatchery. Working with so many birds everyday allows us to see when something genetically special pops up and tinker with selective breeding for specific egg colors.
A few years back we brought in a line of special quail that lay blue eggs and as the years have gone on we have selected for the traits we like best in the birds - speckles and nice dark colors. It is slow going but we are starting to see a group of quail that are consistently laying really nice dark and interesting blues like these. 🤩
We will continue to isolate, select, watch, breed, hatch, raise and repeat with the birds that are laying these shades to see if we can stabilize these colors and add them to our lineup of offerings for you all. We have all sorts of fun breed surprises coming up in 2020 (ordering lists will open up January 1st) but these blue quail egg beauties will have to wait until 2021 😊
Chickens and quail are such amazing animals because they stack so many functions, they:
🐥 Are pets (therapy animals for seniors even!) 🐥Provide eggs/protein
🐥Create fertilizer for the garden
🐥Eat food scraps so they stay out of the landfill
🐥Cut down on tick populations
🐥Can be used to remediate land and help with #regenerativeagriculture 🐥Can self replicate if you have a rooster in the mix and a broody hen. 🐥Get us outside and breathing fresh air while doing chores. 🐥Provide endless entertainment ❤️
What breeds of chickens or egg colors are you most excited about these days?
Many snakes eat mice, lizards, frogs, and some even eat other snakes. What about a snake that exclusively eats centipedes? This black-banded centipede eating snake from Central America does just that. (Scolecophis atrocinctus) 🐍
Video by @chrisweeet so many fascinating reptiles and bugs on that page I suggest you check it out! 🙌🏼
