📍Bosra was once the capital of the Roman province of Arabia, and an important stopover on the ancient caravan route to Mecca.
Bosra's most impressive feature is its superbly well-preserved Roman theater, and there are also early Christian ruins and several old mosques to be found within its great walls.
Bosra witnessed aggressive battles during the war and was severely damaged, but after the Syrian government took the control over it, it's going under restorations and life is returning back slowly to the city.
Upon descending from the old city wall along Bari's northern flank, a curious little piazza opens out, hemmed in on all sides by apartment blocks, and lined by ten lonely columns. At the close of the 9th century AD, Bari, along with large swathes of Italy, was under the rule of the Eastern Roman Empire, the remnant of Ancient Rome which ruled from Constantinople, a remnant we today call the Byzantine Empire. By the death of Emperor Leo VI the Wise in 912, the Byzantines had all but left behind their Latin origins, favouring Greek as their language and Eastern customs over those of the West. According to Barese legend, it was around this time that a riot broke out in this square, sparked by Byzantine insistence on accompanying the brides of locals to church. The grooms of Bari revolted against their overlords, and the columns of Holy Mary were spattered with blood. Eventually backing down, the Byzantines ceased the hated practice, and the Church was renamed 'Santa Maria del Buon Consiglio' (literally 'Saint Mary of Good Advice'). In 1560 Queen Bona Sforza of Poland-Lithuania granted the church financial support to cover the care of orphans. Upon her death she left it a generous endowment to pay for the dowries of the ten young maidens who resided there. Becoming an orphanage, the church was a social support for Bari until its final abandonment in 1824. On the eve of war in 1939, the city authorities, keen to restore the Romanesque look of Bari, ordered the church's demolition. All that remains now are the ten columns of the nave, surrounded by the descendants of the church's beneficiaries!

I wanted to see the Vesuvio and visit Pompeii since a very young age and finally I managed to do it! Sometimes we don't prioritize visiting places quite close to where we live, as they seem "easy" destinations. But what I have realized during the years is that you don't need to spend hours and hours in an airplane to see worthwhile places and points of interest. Pompeii is for sure one of the most interesting archeological sites I have ever visited. A massive city of its era, a city combining wealth, technology, commerce, art and a beautiful scenery; the sea on the one side, Vesuvio on the other. Seeing the breathtaking volcano a few km away made me think once more about the power of Mother Nature. She is capable for the greatest joys and the most painful disasters.

Lochranza Castle stands on a narrow neck of land connected to the south shore of Loch Ranza, at the northern tip of Arran. The first castle here was erected in the late 13th or early 14th century, as a rectangular hall house defended by a small tower at the south west corner.
