One of the highlights of traveling in Sri Lanka is the amazing opportunities for spotting wildlife. The island has over 20 national parks and offers the best safaris outside of Africa as well as the best places for spotting blue whales and dolphins in the wild. 🤩
Some of my best experiences in Sri Lanka include seeing hundreds of dolphins 🐬🐬🐬 in Kalpitiya, the safari in Wilpattu National Park and seeing orphaned baby elephants being fed at the Elephant Transit Home 🐘🐘🐘 in Uda Walawe National Park 🥰
Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to spot herds of hundreds of wild elephants 🐘🐘🐘so it's sad that I still saw a couple of places where you can ride elephants. 😭 😭😭 Please don't do this, instead support places where you can wonder at these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat where they are not being harmed. 🌴🐘😀

Starting this week off with some cuteness. Saw this little cub and its siblings in Naboisho Conservancy in Kenya 🇰🇪 in 2018, they were barely able to keep their balance while walking and kept wobbling around - so adorable!

All appeared well fed, looking for a place to sleep
Did you know a male sleeps an average 20 hours/day?
This sighting made our guide's day but the bull did not stick around long .. I had to take this photo on the fly.
These animals are near threatened, not often seen.
Male antlers can reach 2 1/2 twists, this one is 2.
Blue Wildebeasts with their young
As many times I saw these animals, this was the only time I found them standing still. Unfortunately, it was at a distance (without a tripod) so it's not the clearest pic. They're quite skittish and run 50 mph, the exact top speed of a Lion 🦁 Here, they are in a field with Zebras; they often graze with them and Baboons for protection.
Notice their defensive stance guarding offspring.
Best shot I could get of this Hippo in almost an hour 🕗 The only time I turned away he jumped out of the water with mouth wide open gushing water. Unlike elephants, these animals have good eye sight .. as soon as I broke our staredown he made me pay by missing 'the' shot. 🦛
Elephants with baby
I had a wild experience after this photo .. back at the cottage, I was soaking outside in a small pool when an elephant approached. She came over to the courtyard's fence and pushed against it. Then, it cracked against the weight of her body as she leaned in for water. With only my head exposed, I looked up and spoke to her as she drew several trunks and showered us both .. amazing.
Be careful what you ask for .. two days ago in Cape Town, I had arranged to swim with Great White Sharks. Actually, it was a cage dive and I'm told it's quite safe. Not too crazy or even physical but exciting nonetheless. Anyway, much to my disappointment, the dive company called off our excursion due to weather (large rolling waves). Always the optimist, I thought these game drives in Kruger Park might make up for it .. little did I know, I would be getting wet with an elephant today.
While the northern white rhino is nearly extinct from poaching(only two females left in the entire world!) the southern white rhino has a population of around 20,000. This is great news, but the southern white rhino is still threatened from poaching for just it's horn!
