IUCN data list Spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) as Least Concern as the species remains widespread in Africa, and the total world population well exceeds 10,000 mature individuals. Even so there is a continuing decline in populations outside protected areas (and even within some protected areas) due to persecution and habitat loss. Research on population size, distribution and trends as well as conservation actions are needed.
