Every year since 1925 visitors have journeyed into the forest to this majestic giant to sing carols, offer prayers, and lay a wreath at the foot of the tree to commemorate the season and honor our fallen soldiers. .

The Nation’s Christmas Tree was named after Ulysses S. Grant in 1867. It stands at 267 feet tall and nearly 29 feet in diameter. The giant sequoia, the second largest tree in the country, was once believed to be 2,000 years old. Recent estimates put it closer to 1,650 years old.

In April 1925, the General Grant Tree was designated as the Nation’s Christmas Tree by President Calvin Coolidge. The first Christmas celebration at General Grant was held that December.
.
In 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared the tree a memorial, calling it a “National Shrine” to the men and women's of the armed forces who served, fought, and gave their lives to keep America free.
.
It is the only living shrine in the country. The first service took place in 1925 and to this day there have been only two instances where a ceremony wasn’t available for a public viewing - both during World War II when there was a shortage of gas. The public was informed not to make the trek up the mountain, however, a park ranger placed a wreath at the base of tree honoring the fallen heroes.
