This Borough Hall mural, part of a series of WPA murals – one of the few open to the public in NYC - depicts how Staten Islanders once commuted: By stage coach. Here passengers are dropped off at the Black Horse Tavern, which was located at Amboy Road and Richmond Road in New Dorp. Originally called the Rose & Crown Tavern, it dates back to the American Revolution when British troops quartered there. Local lore says the tavern was renamed after a horse being ridden by a British officer took fright and dashed away, killing both the rider and the horse. British officers were also said to have settled their gambling debts there. The Black Horse Tavern was demolished in 1934 to widen Richmond Road. #statenisland#statenislandny#statenislandnyc#statenislandlife#statenislandusa#siny#sinyc@sinycliving
