I'm shamed for being skinny. My. Entire. Life.
The other day as I was waiting for the elevator at my apartment, a man standing beside me looked at me and said: "You're so skinny, how much do you weigh?"
I replied uncomfortably: "I'm 95lbs."
He was astonished: "95? I don't think you look like 95 lbs!"
At this point, I was quite annoyed: "How much do you think I weigh then?"
He looked at me from head to toe, then said: "You look like you're 30, 40 lbs!"
UN-FUCKING-BELIEVABLE! Okay, I get it, I'm skinny, but it doesn't give you the right to comment on my weight!
Somehow people just think that it's okay to say this kind of things to skinny girls all the time.
But imagine if the reverse happened and I was obese, would he dare to approach me and say things like: ’Wow you don't look like you're 200 lbs, I think you're at least 300?!"
Well, that incidence inspired me to make my 𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙤 (out now - 𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐊 𝐈𝐍 𝐁𝐈𝐎), where I talked about my story as a skinny girl dealing with body shaming all my life, and I also share practical tips to retrain your mind to love your body and feel confident in your own skin.
I know that #bodyshaming happens A LOT to skinny girls.
It wasn't just strangers, everyone, literally everyone, from my family to my friends, would say things that can be really hurtful, even if it was unintentional.
Okay, I get it, telling someone that they are skinny is seen as something so normal and harmless, after all, it's not like calling someone fat, right?
It's just as bad.
All types of body-shaming are wrong and unacceptable.
I wish at that moment, instead of just putting on an awkward smile, I was brave enough to say:
"That's very rude and disrespectful. It's not right to comment on other people's weight. What if I did the same thing to you? How would you feel?'
But there will always be next time, and from now on, if someone says that I'm too skinny, that I should eat more, that I'd look better if I gained 20 lbs or anything like that, I'll look them dead in the eye and say:
"I'm happy with my body and my weight, and nothing you say will ever change that. Thank you!” :)
