Spirulina to the rescue!
Spirulina as a form of algae and is found naturally in tropical, alkaline lakes, and is now being cultivated for human consumption. It has been promoted as a superfood that has many health benefits such as improved detoxification, treating asthma and improving memory, but unfortunately there isn’t any evidence to support these claims.
Spirulina is actually a very nutritious food item, that is high in protein and vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, and vitamin K and vitamin A. However, a lot of those nutrients aren’t bio-available (the body won’t be able to absorb/ utilize it), such as Vitamin B12.
Pregnant women should not take Spirulina as there have been cases of toxic contamination. People who are taking Warfarin or anticoagulants, as well as people who have phenylketonuria (PKU) should also be advised not to include it into their diet.
While Spirulina is nutrient dense, 1- 2 teaspoons a day will not meet any of your vitamin and nutrient goals, therefore it should be used as an addition to a nutrient rich diet and not a replacement of one. The flavor is also a bit of an acquired taste, so make sure you know what it tastes like before buying a whole packet, as it is an expensive product.
