I started 2020 with big dreams about my life, this biz and my desire to build my community in St
Louis...Ready to jump in all committed...but then got hit on the face by COVID! As we slowly got
more “comfortable” with this new thing, I got hit by all the racial injustice that is happening
And as a Jesus loving woman of color who did not grow up in this country but have always been
thankful for the freedom and opportunity that this country provided, and who is married to a
white man from this country, I had to step back again, listen and absorb the harsh reality with a
broken heart for the hurting people around us...and as I was getting more “comfortable” in
having those “uncomfortable” conversations with family and friends, we found out we have
family members on the other side of the world testing positive for COVID!
So after trying so hard to get my mind and life together BEFORE I commit to my calligraphy
career, I have decided to let go! I am choosing to hold onto God for the things that only He can
do! I am choosing to hold onto that
-God CAN heal the nations
-God CAN change people’s hearts
-God CAN heal our loved ones
And choosing to share the joy and hope that is still in my life...
Featured in @art_st_louis’ “Life Interrupted” online & virtual exhibit through July 15: Carla Duncan, Florissant, MO. “Living Sea.” May 2020. Felted: Wool Roving, Silk Threads on Recycled Mailing Tube (using conservation methods), 44.5”x6”x4”. $550.
Artist’s statement:“Even though I’m retired, life is busy. When the stay-at-home orders came in, I decided that during this scary time I would clean my studio. I always make time to create but not often to clean. It was a strange gift to be able to hunker down and work on getting my combined jewelry studio and felting studio organized. It felt good.
While cleaning, I discovered some pieces of prefelt that I had made in a class. Two weeks later I was creating new prefelt pieces in various colors of blue and green, colors of the earth, with white, black, and gold prefelts as accent colors. The fun begins in cutting and laying them out. I had no idea where it would take me. Abstract designs influenced by geometry played a part as colors of water seemed to dominate and I tried to make the sections flow. It was a time of exploring and experimenting and then felting it as Living Sea came together. In hope, that we continue to learn and evolve towards a better understanding of our world.”

Back in April, after losing over $130,000 in critical earned revenue from COVID-19 cancellations, longtime park supporter, The Caroline Loughlin Fund, donated a matching challenge gift of $50,000. We certainly hoped the community could match it, but we never expected the impressive generosity from neighbors, visitors, members, volunteers, staff, and our board.
By June, we exceeded our goal and raised a total of $107,445, which helps us maintain the landscape, retain our staff, and keep the park welcoming to everyone. We are tremendously grateful for the outflow of support from the community. Thank you! 👏🎉❤

We’ve been with @CovoSTL from the beginning, when the beautiful old bank at 4th and Pine was a hard hat zone. Nearly 3 years later, two greats are coming together; Covo is becoming @TechArtista.
There are lots of new faces around here and it’s been a few months since I’ve done a #meetthemaker ✨✨
I’m Tyra! I started Virago Candle Studio because I wanted to take my hobby of making candles for myself to the next level. I wasn’t happy with my original brand, so I took a little break and was able to get the courage to relaunch this April! I was born and raised in St. Louis, and recently moved back after spending a year in Dallas, TX with my amazing wife and our dogs and cat. I’ve always loved candles and I’m so happy that I’m able to create candles that I would not only buy for myself, but that I’m able to share with all of you. When I’m not making candles, I’m most likely snuggled up with one of my three pets and watching a show I’ve seen a million times. I’m working on several new ideas I’m so excited to show y’all! In the meantime, I hope you’re enjoying your Virago Candle Studio candles as much as I do. ❤️
