Stormchasing can sometimes be a frustrating business. Some days you can turn up to a perfect vantage point, be the only ones there and watch as a gorgeous supercell throws out a lightning barrage as it twists and turns out from behind the mountains and onto the valley floor before you.
Here, Arron looks on disapprovingly as a bunch of other chasers with their battery of cameras turn up late to the show and seemingly halt all the activity. Panorama of a supercell on July 19, 2018. This storm had just produced two tornadoes and was “cycling” as it merged with a second cell. All the dark, ragged clouds are an indication that this storm has plenty of energy flowing into it. You can see the funnel on the left from the tornado that had just lifted and on the right is where the next one would form 10 minutes later.

Throw back to the day I ask my good friend Joshua Martin if he wanted to go chasing with me in Missouri.
I forecasted for a possibility of a couple tornadoes in central Missouri. By 2 pm there’s a PDS tornado watch in Texas. By 3:30 pm PDS tornado watch in SW Missouri. By 4:30 tornado watch for north central Missouri.
By 6/7 pm we are sitting in the general target area waiting. Multiple storms are going up to our west. Then we see the storms I saw on Hrrr hours before this chase. It didn’t take long for these to go tornado warn. Funnel cloud was reported but we had to many trees and so we bailed east but the storm picked up speed.
So I found a clearing so we could see the storm and was rewarded with beautiful lightning and some pretty decent structure for Missouri.

When the storm structure goes high end, the cameras have to be ready to snap photos furiously. This is part of a scene where two supercells merged into a mega-monster storm with 100mph winds and baseball size hail in Western Oklahoma. The forward speed on this thing went from a leisurely pace to one where it was surging ahead at more than twice its former speed. Runnnnnnn!

This is the Armed Knight, an aptly named stack off the coast of Land's End, with the Longships Lighthouse reef in the background. It was taken about 15mins after sunset when everything was at its most interesting. First van storm experience was a success! The blue bird pow day was a dream. However, on a ‘keep it real’ note... Friday night was a sleepless one, with the winds gusting in the 70mph range all night long ,shaking the van and making me fear the solar would be ripped off. Then we woke to Kirkwood doing avalanche detonations, roughly 30 times, leading to two very, very scared doggos. Interestingly, the cold hardly bothered us at all. Saturday night was much calmer and the van only shook when Levi was fluffing his bed. Despite the scary winds of the storm on Friday night, we had an amazing weekend and would do it again in a heart beat!

“Night Light”
September 27, 2019. After chasing two other storms earlier in the evening, I found myself in the path of this distant beast of a storm. I did what anyone would do, I waited for it to come to me 😊
On Kansas HWY 177 south of Matfield Green, I watched in awe at a scenic overlook of what was happening to my west. A wondrous clear view at a tornado warned supercell constantly illuminated by radiant fingers of lightning.
Once the rotation and baseball size hail core were too close for comfort, I dropped farther south for safety and watched the storm pass to my north. No doubt, one of the most electric storms I have chased (constant/continuous lightning). In this image, you can see the distant base of the supercell, lightning fingering across the underside of the storm’s anvil, and the shadowed underside of mid-level inflow clouds being sucked into the storm’s mesocyclone. The hail and rain are to the right, and you can also see clear sky to the left. Textbook supercell structure only made visible by the constant flashes of lightning.
Not pictured, the continuous low rumbles of distant thunder mixed with louder booms thanks to the overhead streaks across the anvil.

Illinois Tornado Outbreak

Just last year, on December 1, 2018, a tornado outbreak exploded over the southwestern portion of Illinois. Throughout the day, 29 tornado were reported, with the strongest reaching EF3 status. This tornado, with winds reaching up to 165 mph, hit the town of Taylorville and injured 22 people. It was the largest tornado outbreak in December in Illinois history.
