TRAVEL TO QUILT
Our mate Gillian was recently visiting, back again after an August visit.
Plots and plans have been happening ever since and they are now coming to fruition in a new tour.
As always, we look after our guests from the time they arrive up until we drop them back to the airport at home time
AND in between
We have lots planned.
Artisan Workshops, developing a travel theme, gathering inspiration, making @the_stitching_project and tuition from Gillian to bring it all together.
Take a look at our website for more details
Production assistant, Annalise, is learning about sustainable and eco travel by immersing herself in it. •
A big perk for her is connecting with the sacred nature of Hawaii, this hike was absolute magic.
Did you know that in 2023, hotels in California will have to stop providing those little plastic toiletries? One hotel room can account for 1,000 tiny bottles annually (most of which are thrown away half-empty), so this is a great step towards encouraging travelers to reduce single use plastics. Go California!
let's talk about the carbon footprint of one of our favorite things to do - travel! this post gave me pause...usually I'm hunting for the best deal to save some bennies, but something that I need to be better at factoring into the equation is the impact of my carbon footprint. something i rather shamefully can admit I wasn't really considering previously.
read some of this info. from @manuelbergmann's post, and let me know your thoughts in the comments! "When you take a look at the sign without considering the C02 emission almost everyone would choose flying over train or bus. Why are often flights for shorter distances so much cheaper than trains? ✈️
Well, according to @the.independent about flight and train fare:
➡️ "The costs per-seat-mile of operating a plane may be significantly higher than for trains, but if enough bottoms are filling those seats the advantage starts to move to the airline."
➡️ "Rail infrastructure is a huge fixed cost which has to be paid for by the passengers and freight users, even if only a handful of trains run every day."
➡️ "While air infrastructure isn’t cheap, airlines can buy just the space and time they need at an airport, and pay the going rate for air-traffic control charges. Since their assets are entirely mobile, the route network can change overnight with no significant penalty."
➡️ "Another reason is Airline pilots generally get paid more handsomely than train or bus drivers, and there are always at least two of them on the flight deck. But because planes are so fast compared with trains and buses, those salaries per mile are a lot lower."
. Taking the train or bus for short distances will create about 10 times less C02 than the plane. That’s a huge difference! We decided to take the bus from Munich to Rome as it was the cheapest and has low C02 emissions. What would you have done? 🙏🌿" #repost#ecocandleco#ecocandle#ecocandles#candleaddict#candlelover#soycandle#candleobsession#candleporn#candlegram#scentedcandles#scentedcandle#soycandles#ilovecandles#soywax#reeddiffuser#candlehoarder#candlecollection#handmadecandles#candlemaker#sustainabletravel#wanderlust#sustainable

If we look exhausted, it’s because in the course of 30 hours we went to a house party, two bars, a museum, a book store, took a stroll through Harvard campus, three restaurants, and basically took a walking tour of the whole city. Bleisure at is finest!
Thanks for being the most incredible host and showing me around your beautiful city @margo__may. Also shout out to @bridget__gillis for the guided audio tour and @breeeeezy23 for the warm hospitality ☺️

Guys, today I ask for your help to protect the world’s richest reefs. Please take a moment to sign this important petition >>LINK IN BIO<< and ask the Indonesian authorities to protect Raja Ampat from overtourism. The government has already put several smart conservation measures in place- all we need now is enforcement. We are asking the authorities to 1) limit liveaboard permits to numbers set out in the 2011 regulations, which was 40 permanent + 10 temporary permits and 2) limit diver numbers to thresholds set out in the 2017 Carrying Capacity study.
Once you’ve signed the petition, please repost and share with everyone you know who cares about the future of our planet. If we don’t act now, we risk losing it all. @alex_westover @sealegacy@racingextinction@perikananindonesia@parekraf_ri@kemenpar@oceanicpreservationsociety@indonesianoceanpride

We are on a mission to help rid the world of single-use plastics and unnecessary waste. As a couple of surfers, we are tired of seeing THIS in our lineups. At Froth, we are dedicated to creating low-waste and zero-waste lifestyle essentials for your home and for on-the-go. No longer should you have to buy separate items for when you travel. We’ve made products that can do both. It’s 2020. That sounds pretty futuristic to us, so why are we living like we’re in the stone ages? We have the knowledge and technology to do better for our planet. So that’s exactly what we’re doing here at Froth. Tag friends who need to get out of the Stone Age and start working towards a more zero-waste lifestyle. #gofrothyourself

When I was travelling on my recent holiday I was reminded how useful and easy our reusable makeup wipes are.
So easy to throw in your makeup bag. No product required. Just add water and all your makeup is cleaned off deep into the pores. So good for sensitive skin. You can then wash and reuse again and again.
I always try to travel light. I am not always good at it though but these definitely help lighten the load a little 😀💖.
These pictures are also with my favourite flower - I love the smell of gardenia’s. They remind me of summer 😍😍😍.
What are your hacks for travelling lighter and more sustainably?

Faroe Islands, millions of years ago, were a plateau created by volcanic activity. Weather and time molded the plateau into 18 islands. Uncovered in the process was evidence of the islands' geological heritage. Today we are happy to feature @sanaratulum Daniella Hunter was working as an underwater photographer in the Riviera Maya in 2001 when she first fell in love with the area. 11 years later she made the decision to relocate to Tulum with her family and partner - business activator and humanitarian - Charlie Stuart Gay.⠀
Sanará Tulum is sustainably sourcing materials for their build and development. Foundations and structures have been built to incur minimal displacement or damage to the beach and to allow for the flow of sand. All of their structures are raised above the sand to minimize environmental impact and to allow for access for nesting turtles.⠀
Tulum beach properties are all located off the town grid. This means that all electricity needs to be self-generated and freshwater brought in. Rainwater collection systems, greywater recycling, and microbe-based septic systems (Pirana) are being utilized to improve our sustainability model. Solar power, supplemented by generator power will be used wherever possible and they are investigating additional options for the breakdown of organic waste, and other energy/waste solutions.⠀

I've often found myself looking at photos I've taken on my #flightfree trips. It helps me find motivation, because it serves as a reminder of how the act of flying really, truly, does not have to be a part of my life. Sometimes it's the little things that serve as the best reminders! And so today's #mondaymotivation is brought to you by way of one of the best sights out there: a dog sticking their head out the window. #sustainabletravel#sustainabletraveling#flightfree2020

Every day is a good day. There is something to learn, care and celebrate.
Riding elephants: In order to make elephants submit to elephant rides and other human interactions, they are taken from their mothers when babies and forced through a horrific training process known as ‘the crush’. It involves physical restraints, inflicting severe pain and withholding food and water. By the time tourists come to ride an elephant, it may look at peace, but this is because its spirit has been broken.
The bull hook, used permanently, reminds the animal of human dominance. The cruelty does not end after the crush. When not performing or used for rides most elephants are kept on chains, unable to socially interact with one another.
This is hugely damaging to their physical and psychological well being.

Another Paris view from #eiffeltower
Though this picture captured the city really well, it left me wondering how less trees and parks are in Paris. We need to do more to make our cities sustainable .
We take our mini's with us everywhere....⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We thought it might be handy for you to have a travel sized oil so that your skin could keep its glow even when adventuring to other parts of the world!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, tell us, where are you travelling to this year that you would need some mini's for? Let us know in the comments below!
We're starting the Cultivating Capital Course from @kelseyjorissen from Green Willow Homestead today! Winter has made us a little stir crazy and this is the perfect way to focus our energy and get ready for our busy Summer season!
🙌 This year we have more and more reservations of two families who decide to spend their holiday together. A fantastic idea if you ask us!
These two hot mamas @esmeenoelle & @aranka.world got to spend time together, and so did their husbands and kiddos. If you vacay together you can alternate “baby sitting shifts” so you can actually read that book, have a romantic dinner with your boo or go shopping with your girl. Winwinwin for everyone! 💕 #ittakesavillage#modernfamily

Feeling extremely grateful for the privilege of healthy homegrown produce and organic local food. So much gratitude to be able to align my actions with my values. Conscious consumption is a privilege that most people in the world don’t have. If you have that privilege, use it. When we use our privilege to challenge the current narrative we increase accessibility for everyone.
The industrial global food system is one of the most destructive exploitative systems on the planet but it has the potential to be the most empowering healing force.
The food system is corrupt and it’s messy. Ethical sustainable eating can feel nearly impossible sometimes. How is it that a bunch of bananas at the grocery store could mean destroying communities, pillaging whole countries and regions, deformities in children from chemical pesticides, funding terrorism and drug lords, the list goes on... Growing food and creating community resilience are acts of rebellion. Creating a reciprocal relationship with the land is a revolution.
At @fincatierra we grow all the food needed for a complete healthy diet. There are some colder vegetable foods like cabbage or carrots that don’t grow here and we buy out of preference and luxury. Our friend who lives in the mountains in Costa Rica has an organic farmers cooperative and brings us beautiful veggies every week.
I just did something I’ve never done before - a couple weeks ago I recorded an interview about sustainable travel for someone else’s podcast, and today I repurposed it (with the host’s permission) and published the entire thing as an episode on my own show. Sustainable travel/living is a subject that matters, and while I’m not an expert (I’m still learning about it everyday) I do know that anything we can do to shine a light on it is a worthy use of our time, and our platforms. Thanks to Drew from @travelfuelslife podcast for making this interview happen. Check it out at TravelingJackie.com/podcast (episode 131) or on the Travel Fuels Life podcast (S2: E3)
About this photo: I found all of these empty plastic bottles on one stretch of the Via Dinarica in Bosnia. In considering whether to pick them up and carry them the rest of the way, I admit this is what went through my head: Pros: cleaning up trash from the wilderness is obviously the right thing to do, they add zero weight to my pack, I can leave this place cleaner than I found it and hopefully encourage those who follow to do so as well. Cons: they might get yucky substances on my pack, they might ruin our photos of beautiful Bosnia. COME ON. Put the damn bottle (after bottle after bottle) on your pack, and then share the photos of the ruined beauty, because THAT is just as real.
Rather than get overwhelmed with the big ideas of saving the world that often ironically leave us feeling helpless, start small. What CAN you do, right now? (Like get yourself a good reusable water bottle if you don’t yet have one, or pick up one piece of trash when you see it). Or listen to this episode and plant a seed of change.

We all progress differently. Embrace the process!
I’ve been to many different backpacking trips, but I’m still a slow hiker. Even when I go on a day hike, I think I’m still slow. One of the reasons why I enjoy solo hikes is because I have the freedom to go on my on pace without feeling guilty.
Of course it’s a different story with Ben. He knows me very well by now that he usually goes ahead of me when we hike. Then I realized that I don’t need to feel guilty because we all grow differently.
Compared to what I used to do, what I’m doing now is excellent. I think this doesn’t only apply for hiking. This applies to almost everything in life including a sustainability journey.
Give yourself some love and appreciation for what you’re doing now. At the same time, keep challenging yourself to make improvements. 😉
Wherever you are on your sustainability journey, please enjoy it! You’re doing a great thing for yourself, your environment, and your fellow human being.
Who’s interested in joining a weekly sustainability challenge with us? 🙋🏽♀️🙋🏼♂️
