Our first full day in Switzerland, we were rattled out of the hotel by an army of clamoring cowbells. Today was a celebration for them, a changing of seasons when they come down from the highlands by the hundreds and spend the winter at lower elevations. Their diet changes today as well. In the summer they graze in mountain fields which produces a milk better for cheese. The winters diet makes for better drinking milk.
The river they cross is glacial runoff... and yes, it is that blue. Finally, we made our way back up into the cooler Swiss air and found a few places time seems to have ignored. This country is astoundingly beautiful. .
Way up in the Alps today at the annual Chasedelait. Every fall the farmers bring the cows down from the Alps for the winter and parade them through the streets. Its a big Swiss tailgate party. All you can smell is schnapps and cheese! #swisscows#swisscheese#schnapps
“The call of your bell makes me smile
A happy clang around your neck.
A song that says, “Come stay awhile,
Slow down, sit, take a rest.”
So kneeling in the grass I shudder,
In quiet awe of your pulsing udder,
Warm bottle to the calves you mudder,
A jackpot filled with rich Swiss Butter.
You were the first Swiss bank account.
Happy farmers investing in your ilk. Depositing hay, flowers, water and sun
Withdrawing drops of pure white milk.
I wonder where your bounty ends—
In heavy rounds of gold-crust Gruyère,
In swirling strings of the finest fondue,
The magic melt of a chocolate bar
The satisfying plop of coffee cream,
Grand finale to my dairy dream?
Of all the cows in all the world
Thou art surely the most placid Grand finale to my dairy dream?
Of all the cows in all the world
Thou art surely the most placid
Neither Scottish hairy nor Texas Longhorn,
And thy milk never turns acrid.
With thee I’d happily spend an afternoon.
Watching clouds and whistling carefree tunes,
When I leave at dusk, it will be too soon.
The time when cows jump over the moon. And so,
Silent beast beneath a white-crossed banner,
Above all, I shall remember your manner:
Unflinching, unswayed, unbothered and cooth.
Helvetia’s animal standard of truth.
Oh, humble creature of this mighty mountain land!
You are not a lion, a bear, or some noble stag. But should I ever be crowned king of Switzerland,
Without question, I’d put a cow on the flag! “ Andrew Evans- National Geographic #swisscows#switzerland#Kandersteg#mountains#Alps#dairy#travels#nomads#adventuretime#happyspace
After hiking for about an hour and a half today 😅, I finally saw my Swiss cows wearing their bells! They wear them in order to be found when the clouds roll in at elevation. It’s charming, and as we all know, there’s never too much cow bell! #swisscows#nevertoomuchcowbell#eatpaintloveswitzerland
Every year, on the 17th September, Swiss farming families celebrate “the cows coming home” down from the meadows in the mountains, where they more or less roam free munching grass all summer, to the farms down in the valleys, where they presumably face a slightly less idyllic fate. They dress the cows up and decorate them, then literally march them down the mountains via the pass roads. This was the only rushed shot I got, after parking up by the side of the road amongst a queue of other drivers. The funniest bit though, was the 30 or so pissed-off bikers crawling at 5mph behind them, baking in the 32° heat in their leathers 😂
Yesterday we got to watch this very cool Swiss tradition in Wengen. Alpabzug when the farmers bring the cows down from the mountains. The cows get to spend the summer grazing the mountains for the freshest grass and herbs. The mark of the end of summer is when the farmers march the cows back down into the valley. Such a cool experience to witness. And a couple of cows got a little confused... but no one was hurt ❤️ #swisscows#alpabzug2019 🐂
There's nothing like sitting back and talking to cows. The call of your bell makes me smile, so sitting in the grass I admire your gentleness and highly evolved digestive organ, in quiet awe of your pulsing udder. #swisscowbells#swisscows#mountainlife#naturelovers
A few of my favorite things and memories from Switzerland. 🇨🇭🏔🐄🚞🧀🍫
1️⃣ Sticking my feet in Glacial Water. It was amazing and cold and I’d do it in a heartbeat.
2️⃣ The vibrant green of the steep mountainside. 💚
3️⃣ The slide in #Gimmelwald a small, and gorgeous traditional Swiss town with all the trusting Self-Service shops. I decided to ride this slide while we waiting for the next gondola. 🚠 The Mr. decided to video it just to show our kids. The ending was a surprise to us both. 🤣
4️⃣ The amazing views 😍 and the cows and cowbells. The 🏔 views on our many hikes, the cowbells ringing, and the cow getting up close and personal.
5️⃣ Our “car-less” mountain 🏔 town, #Wengen . It was quaint and had the most amazing views. The 1/2 mile hike to our apt was extremely steep, and the way up would get your heart rate going. No wonder people are so healthy and fit here.
6️⃣ When we headed down the mtn to the valley floor I ❤️ seeing this church with the waterfall behind it. The waterfalls here are HUGE! (1300 feet 😲)
7️⃣ Playing 🎾 on a clay court in our mountain town. I’m sure when #RogerFederer visits Wengen he plays on this court.
8️⃣ Bowling 🎳 a STRIKE on the top of a mountain in the Alps. 🏔
Switzerland, you have my heart. 🇨🇭❤️🏔
📷 @rigi.ch // Just take a deep breath and enjoy this scenery 🏔🐂 Cows and panoramic views on the way up to #Rigi – can it get any more Swiss? 🤭
