#tadpoles that we've been taking care of. The kids noticed them on July 4th, in a wagon full of rain water...and apparently it's a neverending cycle of baby frogs. There are so many different sizes of them in there right now. Hoping when it gets (Florida) cold the mama's will be done, and we can dump this water. L sure has enjoyed watching them grow.
Pretty excited to see this momma frog sneaking in for #tinyecosystemtuesdays , staking her claim on our inundation tank, and advancing this tiny ecosystem up a few rungs on the taxonomic ladder. This majestic little amphibian is a Bronze Frog; a subspecies of the Green Frog that is endemic only to the mississippi basin and the gulf coast. Often called a Banjo Frog here in Southeast Louisiana for their late-night-bayou-serenade call that sounds a bit like a banjo string being plucked. Even the scientific name Clamitans, meaning “noisy” in latin, pays respect to this loud call. These frogs, despite all the racket they make, can be pretty hard to spot when they are out and about at night. So this was quite a treat for me to catch her in the act of laying eggs in one of our inundation tanks.
Here at Woodlands Conservancy we use tanks like these to train certain native trees to thrive near-permanent inundation conditions. After a series of flooding and draining sessions we leave them submerged until they are ready to be established in the wettest areas of the park. One of the main hurdles is that you can't exactly just fill a bucket up with hose water and drop the trees in. The sterility of common tap water will actually have the opposite effect; causing the tree to lower its defences. So the more “alive” the water is the better chance the tree species has at survival when it gets planted.
Added bonus, the tiny ecosystem that forms in each tub is an ideal representation of what goes on in the little pools streams contained in a forested wetland. It all starts with the algae, then obtains more and more complicated organisms until finally the invertebrates move in, like our momma frog here. All of this happens over a period of just a few weeks. I would like to think that conservation projects like this, not only help the trees, but also bolster the local amphibian population.

Polliwog!!! I've made tadpoles and polliwogs with legs, now my kids want me to make a polliwog with arms and legs, and a frog! I just wanted to have a soft tadpole to squish...and not kill....... Coming to my shop soon!!!
Frogs and tads are doing well. One frog died in transit, so I thought I had nine. Then for several days I could only find six. One frog is way bigger than the others, so I assumed she was eating the others. Then I counted eleven a few days ago. Now I don’t know what to think. #frogs#greentreefrogs#tadpoles
Did you know that the tracks of elephants create small pools which provides for hundreds of other microbiota to exist.
The elephant footprints fill up with fresh water from condensation and rain then🐸 frogs lie their eggs in them. Tadpoles then take form and spend their first moments of life totally dependent on these micro-watering holes for life in the dry season.
We say that Elephants safeguard natural places because the massive size of an elephant naturally protects space for thousands of other creatures to coexist, keeping humans out of animal jungles.
In protecting elephants, protects the forest👏🐘 💗🌿 Learn more at @ganeshproject www.ElephantsNow.org
