That movie is still one of our favourite and most quoted films 🤣 Anyway, this weekend we went to the model village in Bourton-on-the-Water which is so much fun. It’s really reasonable at £4.25 for an adult and £3.25 for a child (3-16). Have you ever noticed yourself answering “no” to your children, and then when they ask why, don’t really have an answer?

I have. Pretty regularly, in fact.

I really, Really disagree with the whole “because I said so” crap. I mean, yeah, you’re the parent and all, but they’re just KIDS!!

They are learning!! .
They just want to know why the rules are the way they are. It helps them to understand the entirety of said situation. Doesn’t it for you??
.
And sometimes, when we don’t have a good answer to why we tell them “no”, maybe the answer really could be a “yes”.
.
Case and point.🔝

Kiddos-“Can we ride our bikes on the beach while we hunt for shells” Me-“no”. Kiddos-“why not?” Me-“because...well, won’t it be thought to do both?” Kiddos-“it’s not hard for us, Mommy”. Me-“hmmm...”ok then!”
.
See? Not worth an argument. Letting them figure out what works. Being respectful and accepting of their ideas.

And they did totally ride their bikes and hunt for shells for almost 2 hours. And loved it the whole time!💫

Some places are just so special they are worth visiting over and over. For us Scotland is one of those places. There’s just something about the wild beauty of the land, the quaint villages and historic castles, and the accents and culture that we can’t get enough of. Where’s that special place for you?⁣

Posing in Ninh Binh ❤️🇻🇳 We went on a busy but amazing tour of Ninh Binh today. We weren’t sure if we really had the budget or time but so many people (in real life and on the ‘gram) recommended it, that we booked ourselves on a cheap bus trip. SOO worth it! We were absolutely exhausted by the end and all fell asleep on the drive back to Hanoi. I will put some videos and stuff up tomorrow. .

Some places are better by bike. In cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen there are more bicycles than there are cars and in London it’s fun to hire Santander bikes to cycle around the parks.
We’ve now discovered another great city for cycling. Bordeaux, in south west France, is ideal for biking around because most of the historic centre is traffic free so it’s a real pleasure discovering the medieval streets, squares and ancient gateway of this beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site. Even better, take a guided bike tour with @bdxbiketour and learn a bit more about the city while you pedal down the streets. One of the most memorable parts of our cruise was visiting the Baboon Sanctuary in Belize. We took a 30 minute drive outside the city for a one of a kind experience.

In the middle of the jungle we got to see wild howler monkeys up close. Liv even got to feed one of the a banana! I’m share all about the un-Belizeable (get it?) experience on the blog!

📍The Enchanted Village at Jordan’s Furniture in Avon, MA

The story:
.
Throughout the 1960's and until 1972, Jordan Marsh displayed the Enchanted Village in its Downtown Crossing store in Boston until the display closed. It was an integral part of the holidays. In 1998, Macy’s bought Jordan Marsh but sold The Enchanted Village to the City of Boston where it was displayed at City Hall Plaza and then at the Hynes Convention Center. Due to lack of funding, Boston also stopped the display and the Village was put up for auction.
.
Jordan’s Furniture purchased the surviving pieces of the Enchanted Village at auction in May of 2009 and restored the vintage collection to its former glory. The Village is now on permanent display in the Avon store, and is open (and FREE) to enjoy during the holiday season.
.
The Enchanted Village is magical and aside from the beautiful Christmas displays, there are other fun attractions inside, each for a small price, such as a Polar Express train ride and Enchanted Ice (ice skating). Oh! And the kids can visit with Santa and parents can take a picture for free! .

Talking about cacti, here are some giant and different kinds we saw in Galapagos nearly 3 months ago.

Candelabra cacti that have many long arms, seem to be the ones we see most common in Saguaro National Park. They look slightly different though.

The Prickly Pear cacti, in pear shape, are the most common ones we saw on Santa Cruz Island in Galapagos.

I only saw the yellow Lava Cactus, on one of my boat trips to Bartolome Island, 3 hours by boat from Santa Cruz.

I'm not sure where and when we will see these giant cacti again. They certainly look extraordinary, and have outlived us, our parents and even grandparents.

MY TOP TIP whilst out and about in London this Christmas...
FREE MINIATURE ART INSTALLATIONS and they’re LITERALLY UNDER YOUR FEET on the famous ‘Wobbly Bridge’ aka The Millennium Bridge!!!
I stumbled on them whilst looking down at what I thought was multicoloured chewing gum, and once I realised what was under my feet I couldn’t stop myself from looking out for more. There are possibly hundreds of fab mini street art paintings or should I say ‘Bridge walkway art’, and I must of walked or bumped into at least 20 people whilst trying to take a closer look!
They are literally INCREDIBLE...
Take your kids...

Take Granny & Grandad...
Take your mates...
Take the dog...
or just go on your own...

Me: If I bring my wheelchair and it doesn’t fit, can I just turn around and go back?

Guy: Sure. That should work. You’d just have to wait at the truck for the tour to come back.

🤣🤣🤣 I can’t even. We ended up going with Antelope Canyon Navajo Tours, whose tours are in fact wheelchair accessible (as long as you have a chair that can handle some sand. When we went it was wet and easy, but I imagine that’s not always the case). We loved our guide and she was great with the kids. Here’s what you need to know before you go:

🗓 Book in advance. Way in advance. Tours fill up fast.
.
🤷‍♀️ Debating between upper vs. lower canyon? The lower canyon is entered by ladder, requires shimmying through small crevices, and most groups don’t allow children... easy decision for us 🤣 It’s skinny at the bottom and wider at the top. The upper canyon is wider at the bottom and skinny at the top, which makes it easier to navigate.
.
♿️ The upper canyon is wheelchair accessible, but call before you go. Wheelchairs may not be permitted on exceptionally busy dates.
.
⏰ Arrive early... or miss your tour.

A few minutes after this cheery photo was taken, Finn took the grumpytrain straight to sulksville. He was tired and hungry and fed up. He looked at me with a mopey face and tears in his eyes and said, “I never even really wanted to do this anyway.” The mom guilt immediately set in and I started to regret the money and time spent on this “super fun” family outing failure.

Then, Nick came over and said something like, “It’s ok buddy, you’re not gonna like everything we do. Mum and I still had fun.” ...🤯 WHAT!? You mean parents can have fun even if their kids don’t!? Is this what being a Dad feels like?? 😂

Maybe I’m alone in this, but so many times I let my feelings and experiences be wrapped up in Finn and Evie’s feelings and experiences. How many times have I had fun until I realized they weren’t having fun?? I’m an enneagram type 9/peacekeeper, INFJ/diplomat, green/phlegmatic temperament. Keeping the peace is the name of my game, so this is revolutionary for me. But, I’m working on owning my experiences, especially in this season, even if the kids don’t. Is this a mom thing, or just a me thing? 🤪

Saguaro fun facts:
1 - they grow up to 40 feet tall
.
2 - their rate of growth is about 1-1.5inches in the first 8 years of life
.
3 - it takes between 50-100 years for them to grow an arm 😳
.
4 - you don’t need to go to Tucson specifically just to see them 😂 🤦‍♀️ but it was definitely worth it!

COLORADO: It was cold and ❄️snowy❄️ this morning when we woke up in Nebraska and it made me ache for piles of snow❄️, hot chocolate☕️ and snowball fights with the kids☃️! But alas, we all still had to run off to work and school. 😔

This pic was from our last ski trip to Colorado. When we got to the condo in Silverthorne we bundled up and went outside to play. There was just feet of snow and the mountains and trees under the thick white blanket were just breathtaking. One of my favorite memories from that trip!

She is his mini through and through. The way they walk, the way they pout and most especially the little bouts of wranger rage that comes out when they break something and can’t put it back together 😬 (so much fun for mum!)

What’s most interesting is their emotional connection is like no other I have seen. She is sad when he is and he experiences pure joy when she laughs. .

🇧🇷 Ela é sua miniatura, igualzinho a você. O jeito que eles andam, o jeito que eles fazem birrinha e principalmente os pequenos ataques de raiva que surgem quando eles quebram algo e não conseguem recuperá-lo 😬 (muito divertido para a mãe!)

O mais interessante é que a conexão emocional deles é como nenhuma outra que eu já vi. Ela fica triste quando ele está e ele experimenta pura alegria quando ela ri.

Last weekend, on a whim, we took the kids (including our 7-week-old) on quick trip to a beautiful mountain town here in Germany. We enjoyed sunny skies, crisp fall air, and inspiring views of snowy peaks. We didn't have much of an agenda. We just wanted to get used to traveling again, now as a family of six. We'd taken a travel hiatus during my third trimester and the first several weeks of our son's life, and we were excited to get back into the habit.

Things went pretty well, I'm happy to say. But in bed that night I kept thinking about the things I’d forgotten to pack that I’d wished we’d had with us.
⠀
I've read lots of online must-pack lists for families. My favorite lists include small, light items that make our trips easier for everyone. Even better if they’re cheap and easy to find!

6 years ago andy had the privilege of hosting @henrikfield, a German exchange officer as his roommate for a semester at West Point. They quickly became friends. 6 years later the Army would reunite us again, as we all live in the same country! Henrik happened to be in the area for the weekend and we made plans to spend the day with him. Liam loved meeting his uncle Henrik for the first time, and quickly forgot we even existed. Now Liam is obsessed with him and a big fan of sweet tea, thanks to uncle Henrik. Can’t wait to make that long drive up north to come visit you and Maxi!! We miss you already!! Liam can’t stop talking about you! .

We learned so much at the National Hangeul Museum in Seoul, a museum dedicated to the Korean Alphabet. ⁠
⁠
It is free to enter and includes a good historical introduction, as well as some interactive exhibits and a kids museum area. The kids area didn't have any English translation but was still fun to explore. ⁠
⁠
Hangeul was created by King Sejong in the 1400s as an alternative to the use of Chinese characters to write in Korean. He wanted an alphabet that was created specifically for the Korean language that would make texts more accessible to people. ⁠
⁠
The museum showed a deep pride for the Hangeul alphabet, which was repeatedly referred to as the most scientific and beautiful alphabet. It was very interesting to see how the letters were even created to mimic the shape the mouth makes when saying that sound. ⁠

I don’t want to jinx it but I think we cracked the jet lag. Or we had one good night. Time will tell. We did some Christmas shopping today, experienced K-Mart. The UK needs a K-Mart. Basically a ‘shit shop’ where everything is dirt cheap. Check out my stories for our fancy trolly. And then we spent all afternoon in the pool. We’re basically prunes now but we od’d on factor 50 so at least we’re not burnt prunes.

Siquijor is an island with an abundance of beautiful waterfalls 💦 Some are more known and others less so. .

This is Kawasan Falls, not even our local friends knew about. One of the reasons for it to not be particularly well known is probably that it is a bit tricky to get to (our tip is to avoid it just after heavy rain fall or if you’ve got bad knees). But when you DO get there you will be rewarded! And chanses are you’ll be all alone, so if you haven’t had a guide take you there, you might even dare to go skinny dipping in your own private waterfall! .

The desert has many faces. We enjoyed climbing up the dunes, getting our shoes 👟 full of sand, enjoying the view over the seemingly never ending sand and mountains. In the end, we ran downthe dune all together which is definitely one of those moments you never forget. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

HANCOCK GORGE had us wading through ice cold pools, scaling ladders, negotiating slippery rock ledges, hugging the walls of the gorge and scrambling our way across rocks to get to the end. We even had to spider walk along narrow parts of the gorge to get through. It was super challenging but by far the most fun we have had climbing through a gorge. We absolutely loved every second of this experience! 🤙🏼

This was my pregnancy announcement for Miss Jo... who just turned four years old! Snowboarding has always been one of my all time favorite adventures! I went every Saturday with my siblings growing up. Christmas Eve was always spent snowboarding. My husband and I took a snowboarding class together in college while we were dating so that we could go twice a week. We eventually got engaged snowboarding, while in that class. Miss Jo was an end of November baby, so the winter I had her was the first that I didn’t spend outside adventuring. I loved that newborn phase so much, but I missed snowboarding and even just being in the mountains with trees covered in snow. So the next winter, we decided that we needed to figure out how to adventure with a kid in the winter or I was going to lose my mind. That winter, we bought snowshoes to break into something we felt we could achieve with a baby on our back. The next winter, we bought cross country skis to up our game a little and even rigged our bike trailer with thrift store skis so we could pull the now two year old. The next winter (last year), we had out next baby in October, so we mostly just did winter hiking and sledding. This year though, we are finally dipping our toes back into our favorite adventure! Miss Jo had her first of three snowboard lessons on Saturday! It may have ended early due to her being exhausted... but we were there! Trying! Adventuring with kids is not for the faint of heart! What a weekend! Almost got blown away on a photoshoot with a super fun family, got out in the National Forest to cut down our first wild Christmas tree, and got festive af at our towns local Christmas Market. I remember when we sold all of our stuff earlier this year, I realized how much money we had spent on just clutter. Home decor, linens, like do we really need 15 throw blankets? We sold so much stuff we were able to fund 7 weeks abroad in Europe. We came back to the states to some tote boxes of clothes and keepsakes and the kids toys. We swore we were going to live the minimalism lifestyle when we returned, but man was I wrong. This table for example 😆 $3-$5 section at target and I have myself a very nicely decorated entry way table in our home. Something months ago I would have told myself was a waste of money. BUT buying a home and settling down roots here changed our mindset. We want pretty tables to come home to everyday 😂 i don’t think we’ll ever sell all of our belongings again to fund a trip, that was a once in a lifetime deal. But I’m definitely not attached to material things by no means. .

The craziest thing happened when we were at Disneyland the week before Thanksgiving...we felt like we were almost the only people in the park the whole morning. ⠀
⠀
We went on a Friday the week before Thanksgiving. It was the last day of school before Thanksgiving break for California schools so I'm guessing most locals were in school that day and it made a big difference.⠀
⠀
We arrived at the Disneyland gates about 45 minutes before the park opened. (The Magic Morning entrance was over at California Adventure that day.) They start scanning tickets and letting people gather at the end of main street about 20 minutes before the park opens. We lined up near Frontierland so we could make a quick dash to the new Star Wars areas of the park. We went straight to the "Rise of the Resistance" ride and didn't have to wait more than 10 seconds. We then rode Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain, Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones and Space Mountain all in just 2 hours. So much fun!⠀
⠀
The crowds did increase throughout the day but we had a MaxPass and just scheduled our rides and really never had to wait. It was a perfect day to visit the parks.⠀
⠀
We also went the next day on Saturday and it was jam packed with crowds all day long. We were happy we'd had such a productive day on Friday and didn't worry about doing a lot on Saturday. ⠀

Yay for a low crown day at Disneyland!⠀

We spent most the day exploring the cute farmers market in this little hillside town. It was hot so I bought a hat but it quickly was stolen by Penny. I think she looked cuter in it anyway. 😅

I was not ready for the size and amount of these cacti all around Arizona!

Saguaro fun facts:
1 - they grow up to 40 feet tall
.
2 - their rate of growth is about 1-1.5inches in the first 8 years of life
.
3 - it takes between 50-100 years for them to grow an arm 😳
.
4 - you don’t need to go to Tucson specifically just to see them 😂 🤦‍♀️ but it was definitely worth it!

Me: Is the canyon tour wheelchair accessible?

Guy on phone: Huh. I don’t know. .
Me: Do you know who I could speak with to find out?

Guy: Me. I don’t think I’ve ever been asked that before.

Me: Can you fit a wheelchair through the canyon?
.
Guy: I don’t know how wide a wheelchair is, but I would think so.

Me: If I bring my wheelchair and it doesn’t fit, can I just turn around and go back?
.
Guy: Sure. That should work. You’d just have to wait at the truck for the tour to come back.

🤣🤣🤣 I can’t even. We ended up going with Antelope Canyon Navajo Tours, whose tours are in fact wheelchair accessible (as long as you have a chair that can handle some sand. When we went it was wet and easy, but I imagine that’s not always the case). We loved our guide and she was great with the kids. Here’s what you need to know before you go:

🗓 Book in advance. Way in advance. Tours fill up fast.
.
🤷‍♀️ Debating between upper vs. lower canyon? The lower canyon is entered by ladder, requires shimmying through small crevices, and most groups don’t allow children... easy decision for us 🤣 It’s skinny at the bottom and wider at the top. The upper canyon is wider at the bottom and skinny at the top, which makes it easier to navigate.

♿️ The upper canyon is wheelchair accessible, but call before you go. Wheelchairs may not be permitted on exceptionally busy dates.
.
⏰ Arrive early... or miss your tour.

Place of the most beautiful sunsets in the world? Perhaps. Costa Rica has been an adventure. We met new friends. Tried new foods. Drove different roads. Spotted animals new to us. Visited the rainforest, a volcano, the beach, took a boat down a river. It has been an adventure we won’t soon forget. We are sad to say goodbye. But, we will also be glad to be home. Pura Vida!

We’re so excited to go see this again this year! Such an incredible place. .
Thought I’d share some of the tips I was wondering about last year before visiting, since it gets super crowded! I was actually knocked down by another visitor who was walking backwards while I was taking this photo (and I had a kid strapped on too!🤦‍♀️)
.
1 - the tickets work on a timed entry. This means you can only enter during the time period you got your tickets for but you can stay as long as you want. Try to get tickets for the earliest time slot available that day (last year it was 2pm on weekdays and noon on weekends). The later it is, the more crowded it gets since people hang around.
.
2 - don’t try to time for sunset! You want as much light as possible to light up the castle walls. It can get too dark otherwise, and since it’s winter the sun will be down fairly early.
.
3 - if you’re interested in doing the ice slide (you totally should!!) line up for that first since that line gets insanely long.
.
4 - boots and snow-pants for the kids! The path can be uneven or covered in snow. I’ve also seen some families bring sleds since strollers won’t work here.

Do you have a dream to change careers or do further study? I’ve always been interested in learning more about how relief efforts for natural disasters are managed or providing humanitarian aid.

I thought I was too late to change careers, but I’m thinking about when Emmie gets older and doing a job that has meaning for me, not just sitting at a desk. ⭐️ I’ve found a course at Charles Darwin University, a Bachelor of Humanitarian Aid and Development, that is a step in the right direction and will give me the skills in community development and international humanitarian assistance. I’m pretty excited. It can be done online and will take three to six years…but I’ve got time.
