Nothing says LA layover like a stop at In-N-Out burger and we had to try it to have our say in the endless East Coast VS West Coast, Shake Shack VS In-N-Out debate! My take? I like Shake Shack best the buns are softer and the party is meatier. Which 🍔 is your fave?

Merry & Bright last night at the @mun_botanical_garden with these lovely ladies to continue the tradition! Lots of wine and apps came next, of course.

The “Miss Saigon Pho @noodlenami_st.johns from lunch with @magpeyt last week. I ate at this spot several times shortly after it opened, and honestly wasn’t impressed. In fact, I gave it one of the few negative reviews on my blog. But I’m going to eat my words, and all of the pho! Since opening, they have streamlined the menu, upped their service and have some great dishes! This pho has a delicious broth with beef brisket, meatballs and rice noodles, plus all the necessary condiments to make for a great bowl of soup! I’ll be slurping there again soon.

Oh Christmas Tree!! We put our tree up over the weekend and it’s filled with ornaments we’ve picked up on our travels! This Nova Scotia tree we picked up at @lestersfarmmarket is so thick; in journalism school a fellow classmate wrote about a Christmas tree farmer in NS and ever since I’ve always wanted to have trees from there! Imagine your whole life dependant on one holiday.

A little Christmas board for my volleyball team’s holiday party last night: all the usual meats, cheeses and pickled things plus chocolate balls for a little something sweet!

True joy = running with your partner into a winery. @missionestate is the oldest winery in New Zealand with some gorgeous views of the Hawkes Bay vineyards.
1 2727 November, 2019
One of my favourite dishes from my favourite meal in New Zealand: chunks of kingfish ceviche with smacked with Vietnamese mint and lemongrass and pops of roe, then balanced with creamy avocado and crispy onion. The minute I walked into bustling @ortegafishshack in Wellington I knew I would love it, candlelit tables, lush wine list and amazing seafood.
1 1326 November, 2019
And so ends our New Zealand adventure! A family road trip filled with pineapple lumps, wine and laughs. The icing on the cake was a few days to relax on Waiheke Island, a 40-minute ferry ride from Auckland. This view was breathtaking morning, noon and night.
7 6724 November, 2019
The meat pie is iconic in New Zealand, and those little hand-sized pockets of delicious are everywhere! We stopped into @nadabakerynz to try their award-winning steak and cheese pie but they were sold out, thankfully their mince and cheese was AMAZING too! Full of flavour, ooey gooey cheese, all in the palm of your hand.
1 3621 November, 2019
Hawke’s Bay is the oldest wine regions in New Zealand and we did it up right yesterday! From a private tour of the whole operation at @churchroadwinery to the gorgeous tasting room at @craggyrange we tried allllll the wines! Check out my stories for all the details!

The cafe scene here in New Zealand is legendary for a reason - I’ve lost count on the number of flat whites I’ve consumed but every one was great, even at the middle-of-nowhere roadside shops. There’s also usually a fresh pastry to devour or you can gamble and win like I did with this spaghetti and cheese toastie! The cafe owner warned me not to order it because it was too messy to take in the car (which I saw as a personal challenge) and I didn’t spill ONE noodle!
1 3216 November, 2019
The mineral pools at the @polynesianspa in Rotorua are heated by geothermal springs and are so soothing! People have been flocking to this lakeside town since the 1800s to bathe in the healing mineral waters and I could have spent the whole day grazing from pool to pool! I already want to go back tomorrow for another scrub and aix massage (full disclosure: it totally has that fart-like sulphur smells but it’s still great!)
2 2915 November, 2019
The second (yes, second) set of amuse dishes @sidatthefrenchcafe in Auckland the other night: clam and foam in the shell, fish beignet with black garlic crust and the most delicate little cones with fresh peas and buffalo cream. The start of an amazing seven course tasting underscoring the cornucopia of New Zealand ingredients from paua to lamb inventively paired from wines all over the country! The perfect start to our trip!
1 3314 November, 2019
You know it’s a good day when you hang out on two beaches. After a couple days in Auckland, we’ve officially stsrtrd the Ronan family road trip and first stop is the Coromandel Peninsula! Spent low tide in the thermal springs at the Hot Water Beach and tossed a frisbee at Hahei beach a two-minute walk from where we are staying tonight!
2 4913 November, 2019
We made it to New Zealand for the big Ronan family trip! After 30 hours of travel and almost no sleep I’ve got a horrible cold, but we hit the ground running! Day 1 included strolls on the water front, museums and great food! Night caps at @deadshot_nz were the icing on the cake; there’s no menu at this cocktail bar, they chat with each patron and ask them questions about what they like to determine the right drink for each person! They killed it for all five of us!
10 4211 November, 2019
A picture of Gabby in her natural habitat; eating bread with cheese in a new-to-her city! We leave for New Zealand tomorrow (eek) but today I’m thinking about all the delicious food we ate in Quebec City last spring. 24 Hours or Eating in Quebec City is in the blog now, link in profile!
2 538 November, 2019
It was dark when I woke up this morning, now I just wanna eat pizza. Particularly this one from @pizzeriavetri in Philadelphia with speck, pistachio pesto, caramelized cipollini onion and gooey mozza
2 4029 October, 2019
Holy macaroni I’m excited for the weekend! And this macaroni carbonara with lardons from @waterwestkitchen is calling my name!
5 4818 October, 2019
Did you know tomorrow is #worldeggday ? Combining flavours from one dish and tossing it with the ingredients of another is my version of a mixtape and let’s be honest, way more delicious! I’ve teamed up with @eggsoeufs to celebrate all those awesome egg farmers across Canada and I combined my favourite Middle Eastern egg dish with my favourite food group, pasta, to create this Shakshuka Spaghetti Bake. Fall in Newfoundland is short but gorgeous! I had the pleasure of showing @dobbernation and @theprofessionalhobo around earlier this week with @candicewalsh and it made me remember how breathtaking this windy old island is, especially to those seeing it for the first time!

Hello there falafel! My sister @magpeyt and I had lunch at @res.suriana the newish Syrian restaurant on Water Street and it was so good! This falafel wrap was only $5!!!! Plus they gave us free soup! I will breathe garlic like a dragon breathes fire for the next two days but it was worth it, the toum on point!

Donuts and coffee anyone? @federaldonuts in Philly does it right with fancy donuts like blood orange creamsicle glaze and also classics like cinnamon and sugar that are made hot and fresh to order! If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a million times, SOMEONE PLEASE open up a donut shop here in St. John’s!

At my happiest travelling and eating! Devouring the original Philly Cheesesteak at Pat’s King of Steaks in Philadelphia.
2 3325 September, 2019
Checked a special restaurant off the bucket list in Philly this weekend. South Philly Barbecoa is only open Saturday, Sunday and Monday: one the servers told me they spend the rest of the week prepping because they serve more than 5000 people every weekend! We got there around 11am and the place was buzzing with people ordering barbecoa (Mexican braised and slow roasted lamb) by the kilo and devouring $4 tacos. Adam and I each had a taco pancita (pork) and taco barbecoa (lamb) and I finally understand what all the hype is about! If you haven’t watched the story of Cristina Martinez, Mexican chef, activist and undocumented immigrant, on @chefstablenetflix on @netflixca, do it now!

Philly, what a whirlwind! Full of grit, history and a whole lot of delicious food. We saw a great live show, explored the whole city by foot and ate at some of the best spots in Philadelphia; I don’t need to eat for a week!
4 1623 September, 2019
First order of business when visiting Philadelphia: cheesesteaks! You know I did my research and found out that @pats_king_of_steaks is the original inventor of the Philly Cheesesteak in the 1930s so naturally we went to eat. We ordered “two whiz wit” (local short order for two cheesesteaks with cheeze whiz and onions) from their East Passyunk shop window where they are pumping out hundreds to sandwiches on the daily. Cash only, quick ordering, freaking delicious!
3 4321 September, 2019
Well hello Philadelphia! We’ve been here less than 24 hours and I am feeling this city! Tried the original Philly Cheesesteak, saw the Liberty Bell and went crazy at Trader Joe’s! If you know any cool things to do or stuff to eat, DM me!
It’s starting to feel like fall here in Newfoundland. You can smell it in the air. Last October we were in Bruge biking along canals and decided fall is probably our favourite time to travel. Why? Fewer tourist crowds and you can still sit on a patio and drink a Belgian beer.

It's my blogiversary! Seven years ago today I posted my first blog on The Food Girl in Town and it had no pictures food! Just a goofy image of me during our first week living in Halifax (see second image). 2012 Gabby would be delighted to see 2019 Gabby has made a career out of food writing — she can definitely take a better picture too. This one is from our afternoon tea at Jean-Georges' restaurant at The Connaught Hotel in London. Read all about my eating and travels over the past year on the blog now, link in profile!

You can feel the chill of fall this morning and I’m thinking about all the fun summer weekends! The @thequintalcafe opened this summer in Bonavista, read about our Bonavista glamping stay on the blog.

I made peach cobbler for our 3rd anniversary dinner and I’m kicking myself for never having made it before! It’s so yummy and SO EASY!
3 393 September, 2019
Went to @waterwestkitchen for the first time this morning with @vanessalesley for our weekly coffee date and fell in love with the cozy spot already. So many delicious pastries to choose from and we couldn’t help but drool over all the fresh pasta and meats up for grabs (I bought a baguette to take home with me) I cannot wait to visit when they start dinner service!
8 6423 August, 2019
Checking inn on glamping! My latest post reviewing our stay at @bonavistaliving’s glamping pods is live on the blog now and believe me you’re going to want to stay there after seeing the views from bed.

And the new restaurants just keep coming! I’m delighted that St. John’s is having quite a month for openings! Checked out @cojonestacos last week for date night and the space is super trendy and fun! Sadly the food didn’t live up to the decor; while the strawberry-rhubarb margarita was great there was no local beer on tap and the tacos could only be described as meh.
11 3719 August, 2019
It’s the freaking weekend! I’m headed out around the bay for a reunion with @adamronanza’s side of the family to golf, eat mussels and sit by the ocean! I’m signing off social media, see ya later alligator!

A pseudo-panzanella salad for lunch: fried baguette, pickled onion, roasted red pepper, feta, blistered tomato, green onion, prosciutto and crispy lettuce
3 2415 August, 2019
Had a lovely picnic lunch in Bowring Park with @adamronanza yesterday! It’s been a lifetime since we had @mannabakery sandwiches and man we have been missing out! Curried chicken salad for Adam, breaded chicken on pretzel bread for me. Also the cronuts were 👌👌👌
2 5312 August, 2019
St. John’s has a Thai restaurant again! @gingergrass opened last week in the Mix condo building on Duckworth Street and I couldn’t be more excited! For my first visit I just had to get khao soi, my favourite! Known as the Northern Thai Bowl to those who frequented the Halifax Gingergrass location, it wasn’t the typical presentation I’m used to, but had all the delicious layers of flavour I know and love in the broth hiding beneath a pile of fixings!

On the way home from Bonavista we stopped and did the Fox Island Trail for the first time, wow! Gorgeous scenery, lots of wildflowers and part of the trail wanders through a charming village. The next time you’re on the Bonavista peninsula, do this hike! #hikediscovery
1 375 August, 2019
Our meal last night at @the_boreal_diner in Bonavista was special, I love how the use local ingredients! My favourite dish was these nut-crusted local scallops with spiced yoghurt and wine-poached rhubarb. For those cynics who say the only food outside St. John’s is fish and chips need to spend more time in restaurants like this.
4 444 August, 2019
We are in Bonavista this weekend and staying at the @bonavistaliving eco glamping pods perched right in the ocean’s edge. Check in my stories for the full tour and to see all the fun things happening at the Church Street Festival over the next few days! #explorenl#hosted

Had dinner at @terre_restaurant, the new restaurant in the @althotel St. John’s, last night and it was delicious! Buttery fresh-picked chanterelles with new potatoes, ice shrimp on toast, and the apple beignets - oh the apple beignets - tossed in sugar and cradled in a herbaceous cheesy sauce are something I won’t soon forget. These sharing plates are full of local ingredients with a metropolitan sophistication and flavour. I can’t wait to go back.

Scoped out @georgestown_cafe_and_bookshelf new sister cafe Long’s Hill Cafe and Bookshelf on my weekly coffee date with @vanessalesley! Housed in the iconic building that was once Long’s Hill Convenience I’m so excited to have this cafe in the neighbourhood; great reno, delicious coffee and good vibes! Welcome!
6 5226 July, 2019
Guys I finally had lunch at @johnnyandmaes and now I know what all the fuss about! The Big McKenna is big on flavour; perfect soft bun, pickles that didn’t take over the flavour and all kinds of delicious sauce! Was it messy? Yes (in the best kind of way)! Did it live up to the hype? Yes! Did it make me want to eat it every day? Yes!
3 5125 July, 2019
I’ve been slow on the Italy blog posts, but I promise you fun stuff is coming, like my chat with this kind man and his out-of-this-world porchetta at the farmers market in Ribolla.
2 2125 July, 2019
A few weeks back I attended the first-ever #WakeUpToYellow event here in St. John’s chatting with local egg farmers as they handed out free breakfast sandwiches and veggie wraps in Harbourside Park. In the spirit of starting the day as eggcellently as I did with @eggsoeufs , I created this prosciutto and parmesan egg tartine recipe. It takes less than 10 minutes to whip up: if you can scramble an egg and pop some bread in the toaster, you can make this prosciutto and parmesan egg tartine with fig jam and arugula! The recipe and my event recap are on the blog now! #getcracking#ad

Have you been a nauti buoy? The stages alongside the water in New Perlican definitely stood out for their bright paint jobs and punny names! I’m back in St. John’s after a great family weekend on the Baccalieu Trail and wondering if all the coffee I’m drinking will put me to work! How was your weekend?
1 5022 July, 2019
Toutons on the deck all day everyday. Breakfast on vacation is all about lots of carbs, bacon and coffee with baileys.

My new fave place to have a coffee and work is also my new fave place to have a beer: thanks @bannermanbrewingco for making the transition from writing to happy hour very easy.

Say what you will about a grey and foggy day, there’s something magic about an overcast hike on Signal Hill.

Adam and I have been binging Masterchef Australia and are now obsessed with purées and plating. Seared striploin with roasted sweet potato purée, arugula salad with blistered tomatoes and crispy sage, and carmelized onions deglazed in brandy 💥

Mezze in the backyard! Hosted a lovely dinner party last night; we started with drinks and snacks in the backyard followed by candlelit Mediterranean-inspired feast in the dining room, a dreamy summer night to put it lightly.

One of the best parts about staying at a London pub hotel? The food! Every morning during our stay at @theculpeper we devoured a full English breakfast which was typically preceded by a full continental complete with fresh squeezed juice, warm pastries and buckets of coffee. My full review and rant about why you should stay at a pub hotel in London is on the blog now, link in profile!

There are some EGGciting things happening at Harbourside Park this morning! @eggsoeufs are hosting the #wakeuptoyellow event and there are free breakfast sandwiches and veggie wraps! Come chat with a local egg farmer, have some breakfast and grab some free swag! Only until 1030, so break an egg people! #GetCracking#ad#yyt
3 5410 July, 2019
Who doesn’t love a breakfast sandwich? It's my go-to way to start the day — I love all the different ways you can jazz it up in less than ten minutes. And guess what? You’re in luck because tomorrow morning @eggsoeufs is hosting their first Wake Up to Yellow event here in St. John’s! Stroll down to Harbourside Park downtown (across from the War Memorial) tomorrow from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to grab a free breakfast sandwich or veggie egg wrap and chat with a local egg farmer! I’ll be there hanging out amongst the bright yellow tents so come by and say hi! #wakeuptoyellow#getcracking#ad

Delayed Eggs Benny post from last weekend’s staycation brunch at @themerchanttavernnl! No matter how hard I try, I cannot escape hollandaise’s creamy allure.

It’s the weekend, what adventures are you going have? Mine involve family in town, booze brunches and BBQ; hello there summer!

I finally posted about some of the food I ate in China! Our visit to Goubuli restaurant in Tianjin was an experience I’ll never forget; read about what we ate and their historic bao on the blog now!
5 224 July, 2019
A long weekend of hiking, eating and scrabble was just what I needed: I’m trying to hit the ground running back in the #freelancelife but I might forget how to do it. Maybe easing in with lots of coffee?
2 432 July, 2019
Long weekend vibes! We are staycationing here in St. John’s this weekend doing all the stuff we talk about doing and never do! The southern fried chicken burger at @bernardstanleygastropub smothered in jack and coke BBQ sauce and mozzarella cheese and topped with chipotle ranch, bacon and jalapeño coleslaw got me real excited for a few days of relaxing! Pair that with a pint of dayboil from @quidividibeer and you got yourself a date with delicious.

Look at this spread from Saturday night! Matthew and @kl_wells sure know how to set the scene for a party, complete with copious amounts of tiki inspired cocktails, music and food to kick off summer!!!

Looking out from our Airbnb in Tuscany we could see a castle on a hillside in the distance. Naturally we set out to find it: these are the ruins of Castello Di Montemassi built in the 10th century. The patriarch of the Aldobrandeschi family who owned the castle is referred to as “the grand Tuscan” by Dante in the 1300s. There were no gates, no admission and no one to impede our exploration, save for a flock of birds who have made the towers their home.
5 2322 June, 2019
Why isn’t this my everyday. Sigh. The meal we had at Da Nada Locanda in Roccatederighi might have been one of the best I’ve had: blog post coming really soon!
1 2720 June, 2019
What do you do when it rains in San Gimignano? Stumble upon a modern art gallery hidden amongst medieval towers, of course! Galleria Continua has exhibits spread across the tiny town (and the world) but this installation of neon food signs was my favourite!
5 3218 June, 2019
Sampled (aka devoured) almost all the menu at the newly-opened @bannermanbrewingco on Saturday and the Thai Street Fries were the star: crispy fries topped with sweet and sour peppers, green onion, cilantro, nori crumble and Tom Yum aioli! I don’t know what would go better with my Hill o’ Sips IPA.
1 4017 June, 2019
Take me back to when the house up the road was a winery in Tuscany.
5 5514 June, 2019
Checked out the newish brunch menu at @theadelaideoysterhouse yesterday! Underneath those perfect scrambled eggs and crispy shallots is a tender, juicy coffee-rubbed ribeye; their version of steak and eggs is damn good!

Mom's in Toronto for a visit, which automatically means a meal at Mother's Dumpling on Spadina. My fave one is the pork and chive, but I have a strong fondness for the melon, tofu and vegetable ones, as weird as the combo might seem. What's your fave dumpling??

The best brunch I've had in ages, and all homemade! Thanks again to Erin and Matt who hosted with cheesy quiche, brussels sprouts with bacon and tons of fresh banana bread. Not to mention flowing mimosas and Propeller beers from Halifax.
A sunny-looking breakfast with the lovely @jennbartoli today at @mahasbrunch! I had the Cairo Classic with fava beans, falafel, egg and balady bread, and Jenn went with the date scramble. Delicious, as always!

It's blustery outside and there's a whole lot of bluster happening in the world, but it's Sunday, and I just wanna drink some Turkish coffee and gorge on baklava.
Maggie loving the (frigid) winter scenery on Ottawa's Parliament Hill! The Peyton sisters' first day in the capital was triumphant: we successfully avoided the crowds at Red Bull Crushed Ice, ate giant hamburgers and drank boozy milkshakes. #Ottawa#Canada150#Canada#explorecanada#DiscoverON

Royal Arch in Ottawa's Chinatown. Artisans were brought over from China to ensure it proper execution during its construction in 2010 and it's the first of its kind outside China. There are 5 coins are built in it, including one from the Ting dynasty that's over 1000 years old!

A statue of Queen Victoria stands in the centre of Parliamentary library. She was Canada's first monarch and the one who decided to put the capital in Ottawa!
