#louiebrockel ...🐶 thank you for all the snuggles and God Bless those HUGE ears for just listening to the many important stories of those who trust us through their journey. Please stop puking in my car tho. 🤮
The truth is: I make mistakes. (My family’s like 🤣🤣 of course you do!!) But in a therapist role, I am an “expert,” and that can make clients feel subservient to my opinions and ideas. It’s the same dynamic with patients and doctors, students and teachers, children and parents.... 🌈
The catch is: even though I know stuff, I am NOT the expert in my clients’ lives. I am a human being doing my best to attune to clients and understand them, help them develop greater insight into their struggles and feel like their best selves. But sometimes I’ll get ideas and curiosities about a client’s struggle that are not in line with their current talking point or goal. I get it wrong. I mess up. Not really that uncommon. 🌈
What does this mean? If you make a mistake, are you a “failure?” A “bad person?” “Worthless?” 🌈
I work to own my mess ups and illustrate that I can still have self esteem and self-compassion. I apologize, and yet my capacity and willingness to keep helping does not change. I am still a good therapist. I am still a good person... incredibly flawed, but doing my best. 🌈
At the end of the day, I am imperfectly perfect in the eyes of my pup. And I’m still looked right past by my cat. And YOU, my dears, are imperfectly perfect, too. You are hard working, good, and worthy. Nothing- no mistake you make- can change that.
And yea, sometimes I need to tell myself this, too. Because we’re all just human.
These are our little fur family.
Daisy - my boyfriends dog, she’s a tough girl that guards the house but she loves the fam and now gives Beau kisses. *when we first moved in, she would attack Beau daily, but she went away to a 2 week doggie bootcamp to practice socializing.
Beau - I’ve had him since 2017, when my dog Lady was getting sick with dementia. He was gentle and loving with her. He had been returned 2x to the ASPCA for separation anxiety and we’ve learned he is okay when he is left alone as long as there are other dogs around. He likes to be held like a baby and always licks people .
Keeki - Freddy found her on Nov. 1st and he said “hey cat” and she came over. She looked to be abandoned by her family and didn’t have a microchip or name tag. She gets along great with the dogs although sometimes they will try to chase her. She is super smart and is learning to walk on a leash.
I can’t imagine a life without the love of pets! How about you? What are your fur babies?
Animals communicate on an energetic level and they can help ground and calm us. I consider all animals therapy animals.
