SO MUCH PRIDE: @_karenhill_ is an Australian professional mountain biker, sports nutritionist and world traveller.
I’m super proud to announce that she’s also our first @traveltochangetheworld ambassador. 🙌
Over the years, Karen has become a respected name in the mountain bike scene, travelling the world to race in competitions in some of the toughest terrains on the planet.
Outside of her love for two wheels, Karen has a PhD in nutrition and works for the Victorian Public Sector Commission in the Aboriginal Employment Unit.
Currently, she's helping roll out Barring Djinang – a 5-year Aboriginal employment strategy for the Victorian public sector that aims to improve Aboriginal career experiences by placing a strong focus on leadership and development.
Wherever Karen's biking adventures take her in the world, she always takes the positive message of inspiring others to find the good in themselves and have some fun along the way.
We were so impressed with Karen's story we helped fund her eco-friendly bike kit made with material including ground coffee and recycled plastic bottles.
Together with Melbourne based B-Corp Travel Agency @reho.travel and @rehostudytours, the high-performance kit was designed by prolific Aboriginal Australian artist Zac Bennet Brook from @saltwaterdreamtime to celebrate Karen's Torres Strait Island heritage.

My first dive ✔️
We spent 51 minutes in the water looking at coral, a hungry sea turtle, 2 eagle rays, a puffer fish, and all the other fish in the sea! 🐠 🐟
But the best part was going with @claytoncollie - after hearing all of his stories & knowing how much he loves it, it was so rewarding to finally see what he sees and have him show me in one of his favorite places.

The beautiful Royal Rock Temple complex sits about 160m above the road in the southern part of Dambulla. .
Five separate caves contain about 150 absolutely stunning Buddha statues and paintings, some of Sri Lanka's most important and evocative religious art. Buddha images were first created here over 2000 years ago, and over the centuries subsequent kings added to and embellished the cave art.

Lahugala Kitulana National Park may be one of the smallest national parks in Sri Lanka, however it’s also one of the richest in terms of wildlife. .

Crested hawk eagles can usually be spotted singly, perching on trees surrounding open areas. They tend to sit bolt upright on a perch, waiting for their prey, before swooping in for the kill, and carrying off their prey in their talons. Crested hawk eagles will feed on mammals, and reptiles, and can even eat birds of medium size such as pheasants, and junglefowl.

TASTES OF VIETNAM: KOTO (Know One, Teach One) is a not-for-profit social enterprise in Ho Chi Minh City transforming the lives of at-risk and disadvantaged youth in Vietnam through its holistic hospitality training programme.

Meet Tuan. He’s just one of around 1,000 disadvantaged teenagers in Vietnam who has trained at KOTO. Tuan has experienced great loss for such a young boy. Both his mother and father passed away and his sister hasn't been in touch from since she got married.
〰️
Since training at KOTO, Tuan feels like he has another family and will be able to follow his dreams to become a great chef one day.

Rising dramatically from the central plains, the enigmatic rocky outcrop of Sigiriya is perhaps Sri Lanka's single most dramatic sight. Near-vertical walls soar to a flat-topped summit that contains the ruins of an ancient civilisation, thought to be once the epicentre of the short-lived kingdom of Kassapa, and there are spellbinding vistas across mist-wrapped forests in the early morning.

You’ll have to be prepared to climb quite a few stairs to reach the top. On the way you'll pass a series of quite remarkable frescoes and a pair of colossal lion's paws carved into the bedrock. The surrounding landscape – lily-pad-covered moats, water gardens and cave shrines – only add to Sigiriya's rock-star appeal.

✴✴✴MOTIVATION✴✴✴
Since coming back to racing after a couple of on again, off again years, I hear people (mainly girls) not enjoying their training and /or racing.
I find it interesting that we put so much pressure on ourselves to be motivated to 'train', ride and race (or whatever the equivalent is of your chosen sport). Almost afraid to take time out.
Taking time out to refresh my body, mind and soul was the best thing. While initially it was more of a forced break; if you dont learn to rest your body will make you. I struggled with the change and letting go of riding. Because who was I without a bike? It's kind of fun discovering other sides of yourself. My biggest break was nearly 8 months.
Returning from Canada this year, I knew I was ready to go again. The fire had been lit, bigger and brighter than ever before. This time I do things differently; I do what sets my soul on fire, not what I think others will approve of or I should do. At the end of the day, we die once but have the opportunity to live every. Damn. Day.
I appreciate the people that help me and guide me with training, travel and life. Pulling on a bike kit that has a bigger meaning and purpose than just you, is enough motivation in itself.

AU REVOIR HOTEL TOILETRIES:
What has previously been collectables for some are soon to be history as more and more hotels businesses join the global war against single-use plastics.

First, it was the dreaded plastic straws, stirrers and drink picks that were scrapped in many hotels circa 2018 and now it’s long-time luxe love… the ‘mini bottles’ that are getting the boot as the hotel industry looks to soften its environmental footprint yet further. @hyatt Hotels is the latest international hotel chain to join its mainstream competitors in ridding itself of single-use plastic toiletries.

In California, hotel companies won’t have a choice from 2023. Small plastic shampoo bottles will disappear from hotels as part of the state’s bold banning of all single-use plastics.
〰️
The bottom line here as with all environmental policies is that the more hotel businesses that remove single-use plastics across their operations, the more normal it becomes for everyone.
〰️
And the more obvious it becomes of those hotels that aren’t making positive change and doing the right thing. Where would you rather stay?
