The #UK plans to release a small herd of #endangered wild #bison into the country in Kent in the spring of 2022 in order to revive the country's #wildlife . Bison have not been seen in the UK in 6,000 years. In the initial release, one male and three females from Netherlands or Poland will be set free into the UK and allowed to naturally breed to increase the size of the herd.
UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world, with populations of its most important wildlife having decreased by an average of 60% since 1970. In the past, the steppe bison is believed to have roamed the UK until a combination of hunting and habitat changes led to its extinction worldwide. Today, one of its relatives, the European bison is the continent's largest land mammal, weighing up to a ton but only a few are present in the UK and never in the #wild . This will be the first project to introduce bison into the wild in the past 6,000 years.
The plan will also lead to the natural regeneration of a former pine wood plantation due to the death of #trees leading to an ideal combination of woodland, scrubs and glades, which will result in better wildlife overall in terms of insects, birds and plants. These trees will be killed off by the bisons, who either eat their bark or rub against them to remove their thick #winter fur, which leads to the provision of dead wood for #insects and #food for #birds , while also encouraging native plants to grow.
