Riding in a tuktuk is hair raising but fun. Puppet making going on in a tiny back street. #Jaipur#puppets#tuktuk

Baghdad, Iraq / Nov. 2019
A tearsheet from my work this week on assignment with Der SPIEGEL magazine, covering the Baghdad protests with the legendary Christoph Reuter. Magazine issue out on stands now.
For several days, Christoph and I followed the Tuktuk drivers of Baghdad who have become national heroes and icons of the revolution for bravely driving into the line of fire to rescue injured protestors. I’ll be sharing some outtakes from the story this week... more coming soon, stay tuned!
Caption: protestors run from teargas fired by Iraqi security forces; on the right, a protestor stands on the roof of a Tuktuk. The tuktuk is a three-wheeled taxi vehicle that originates from India and Southeast Asia but has recently become a popular mode of transportation in Iraq.

At the Worli Naka junction in Mumbai, construction causing an increased number of accidents and significant congestion led taxi driver Subodh More to start up a volunteer group in an effort to control the traffic.
Since then 80 cabbies have been volunteering for an entire year to man the traffic and make the intersection safer and more efficient. During peak hours, the taxi drivers who do not have a shift handle the traffic on a rotational basis. Even on their one off-day a week they are all taking turns running a two-hour traffic shift!
Kudos to those cabbies for giving back to their society by improving the safety of their community roads!
