“I became engaged to this boy right after graduating from high school in West Virginia. He joined the Navy soon after and became a ‘Hell Diver’ bomber pilot in the Pacific War with Japan. I thought, well, there are no boys left in town to dance with, so I joined the Navy too! After some time we arranged to have leave together, I told him we had been engaged long enough, if you don’t marry me, I’m going to marry a boy I’ve met in Florida! We were married a week later! Aubrey survived his combat missions, and we had forty-five great years together.” Barbara Johnson

This weekend we were honored to host relatives of Charles Robinson, an African-American barber who owned a shop in the Fulton neighborhood. Last week, we installed one of the chairs from his shop in our permanent exhibition.
Yesterday, members of The Virginian Retirement Community visited the Valentine.
Marjorie, one of the residents, was also celebrating her 100th birthday.
As she stood for a photo in front of the "Hear Our Voice" bandolier and the portrait of Richmond's first woman mayor, Marjorie wanted to make sure we captured the items, saying "women should be heard!" #RichmondStories#ValentineCollection#HearOurVoice
219 years ago today, Gabriel, an enslaved man owned by Thomas Prosser, plotted to seize Richmond and free himself and others under a banner emblazoned with "Death or Liberty." The failure of the American Revolutionary war to free enslaved Africans created an environment ripe for rebellion. On August 30, 1800, a betrayal and heavy rains caused the plot to collapse. Gabriel and his cohorts were later publicly hanged in Richmond.
