Many theories have been circulating in the study of civilisations about the decline and disappearance of the Indus Valley Civilisation. It is important to note that the decline and disappearance here means sudden lack of activity that was witnessed in the popular sites of the Civilisation, after which the material progression in the area of the was comparatively slow and redundant. The Civilisation which flourished on the banks of river Indus, saw it’s most mature phase from 2500 BC to 1800 BC. Post which, the disintegration of the largest Bronze Age Culture can be witnessed. It is a topic of great discussion among historians and lovers of the ancient past as to what really transpired which resulted in the end of this great Civilisation?
The following theories have been put forward by various historians:
Mortimer Wheeler : Destruction due to Aryan invasion
Robert Raikes : Tectonic uplift theory
H.T. Lambrick : Change of Course of Indus
Walter Fairservice : Ecological degradation by growing population
Others : Heavy floods destroyed the main cities
None of the above theories can alone prove the decline of the Indus Valley Civilisation. Though, multiple of the above reasons, together could have been the underlying cause of the decline. Historically, this debate is yet to settle and scholars are still in look for a perfect ‘closure’ to this chapter.
