🐾 Fun fact: The most primitive animal found to express cannabinoid receptors is the sea-squirts, an animal tracing back over 600 million years ago! 🐾 Did you know all animals have an endocannabinoid system (ECS)... All vertebrates and invertebrates are known to have an ECS. 🐾 The ECS has been called "the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health." 🐾 If you haven't read about how fascinating this system is, you should because it could be the missing key to unlocking you and your fur baby's health 🐶 🐱
When you take your pet into the consultation room, you’ll see the veterinarian take their stethoscope out and perform a physical exam. TPR is the foundation of a physical exam, so what does it stand for?
TPR = Temperature (T) Pulse (P) Respiration (R)
Different temperatures can occur because of disease, excitement, stress, or environmental issues. Temperature is collected at the end of a physical exam, as it can be a difficult task to do and may increase heart and respiration rates.
Different pulse or heart rates can occur because of anxiety, exercise, pain, disease, or shock. Respiration is based on the rate, depth, and character is breaths.
As we are extremely busy in the lab at the moment testing lots of johnes , neospora and pregnancy samples to name a few , our Testimonial Tuesday will have to be Testimonial Wednesday for one week only . “As a veterinary practitioner of many years in the West Cork region, I have made very frequent use of the services of Animal Health Laboratories and have found them to be nothing short of excellent. Reporting of results in a timely fashion, reliability of the service to match a busy caseload, and an approachable and friendly administrative structure are some of the many reasons I would have no hesitation in recommending them to any practitioners in the area” Micheal Sexton MVB MRCVS , Faxbridge Veterinary Clinic , Clonakilty.
Thank you very much Micheal for a wonderful testimonial , we look forward to working with you all for many years to come. #veterinarian#irishvet#vetnurses#vet#testimonialtuesday#proudbusinessowner#thecustomeriswaysright#leadingthewayinanimalhealth#animalscience#womeninbusiness
Panchito es un Chivo que nos llegó con un cuadro de neumonía, gracias a la rápida acción por partes de sus dueños se pudo realizar un tratamiento completo antes de que el cuadro empeorara.
Hoy en día Panchito está feliz con su familia.
Upon reading this my heart broke and made the decision that posting this in the words of an anonymous veterinarian would be the most appropriate.
I've grown up surrounded by dogs, cats, horses and those of the wild. Cougars typically frequented my front yard and it was common to see a moose on a morning walk.
When I decide to rescue, rehome, adopt or have my forever baby I mean that I take that job very seriously. I think of the hours I'm away from home and how I'll make it up once arriving. We are constantly out and socializing with other dogs or people for that matter. #animals#adoption#veterinarian#repost#wordscantexplain#texas_ig

KIKAS EATING A FULL DONUT? .
Is there any acceptable scenario for this?
My honest opinion is YES, there is at least one possible scenario. A last meal... “Kikas” was a patient of mine (more than that actually) and yesterday, came her time to leave us. I knew her and I was her vet for the past few years.
Unfortunately she had some chronic severe problems and one of them was joint disease ... she could handle them for a long time.. and her owners... tireless... done everything to provide her with the best quality of life... but her time had come.
She can be proud of her owners, is really nice to me as a vet to know people like them, and we could be proud of her, that was always strong until her time come.
Yesterday... yesterday I put “Kikas” to sleep.. she was happy, she knew her time had come... and she ate her full sugar not free donut, she hugged her owner and she fell asleep. .
There is a big problem among all of our pets, they live less than us!
RIP “Kikas” ❣️

Hugo thinks my nose would make a tasty snack! Hugo has recovered well after his portosystemic shunt was closed and is back to being the cheeky puppy he was 🥰 Portosystemic shunts in dogs are usually primary congenital (puppies are born with the condition). Blood coming from the intestines, pancreas, spleen and stomach enter the liver through the portal system. Portal blood carries hormones, toxins and bacterial products to the liver to be cleansed. Small dogs with the condition usually have an abnormal blood vessel that directs the portal blood away from the liver so the toxins can no longer be filtered by the liver. This results in a buildup of toxins in the blood and clinical signs of poor weight gain, small stature and head pressing. Surgery is usually the treatment of choice and this involves placing s constrictor around the abnormal vessel to gradually block the vessel and divert portal blood back to the liver.
Feeling loved at the privilege of being nuzzled by a magpie 🥰 The iconic Australian magpie has a love hate relationship with Aussies as they famously attack people walking anywhere near their nest during spring. Something that is less well known is that only 8-10% of magpies will actually do this and will recognise your face as a friend or foe. If they remember you as being nice, then they will leave you alone for life! Magpies also occupy the same territory with their mate for life for up to 20 years. Their hearing is so excellent that they actually listen for grubs and worms to catch them which is why you will often see them tilting their head. This guy was found by a Good Samaritan at the side of the road. After his vet check was all clear he will be returned back to somewhere safe where he was found to be reunited with his family ❤️ in the meantime he enjoyed lots of head scratches and singing his sweet song into my ear 😘 remember if you find a magpie they chances are it’s family will be waiting for it nearby. Make sure it’s out of harms way and wait to see if it’s family will return to help it 🐣🇦🇺

Credit: @animalemergencyhospital 🐈 We all know cats love to play with balls of string, but it becomes more of a concern when there is a needle on the end of that piece of string... 😬 As you can see the needle pierced through some of the soft tissues structures at the back of this kitty’s oral cavity (ouch!). The most common form of foreign bodies in our feline friends are linear foreign bodies, which a lot of the time are strings. Fortunately for this cat, the string didn’t reach the small intestines. In some cases, the string will go into the intestines and basically cause the intestines to bunch up, which requires emergency surgical intervention to remove the string! This cat should consider herself lucky! 🐈🙌🏼

Credit: @the.eye.vet 👀 Can you guess what is going on here with this cat?
The cat is a 15 year old, spayed female domestic shorthair 🐈 She was diagnosed with hyperthryroidism and high blood pressure. The answer is bilateral serous retinal detachment which has likely occurred secondary to high BP.
Check out @the.eye.vet for more interesting eye cases 👁👍🏼
