November at the beach! Beautiful, tea-colored water flows into the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico this morning at the Western Lake outfall.
Western Lake is one of our rare coastal dune lakes, freshwater lakes that open periodically to exchange water with the Gulf of Mexico. These periodic exchanges result in a wide range of salinity in the lakes, which in turn leads to dynamic floral and faunal communities. Dissolved tannins from decaying leaves cause the deep, clear amber color of the lake water.
