A lone Tusker makes its way up the opposite hill as we watch its movements cautiously from this one.
These hills of Bannerghatta are rife with Man-Elephant conflicts. The habitat and feeding grounds of these animals are rapidly shrinking as encroachments and construction plots advance into the forests. The Elephants as a result of food shortage stray into crop fields and plantations. At times people throw petrol bombs and firecrackers at them to ward them off.
Casualties are common here as well. This Tusker, later that evening, trampled over a cowherd lady who unsuspectingly crossed its path. The farmers here sleeplessly hold torches and beat drums all night to save their fields.

Indian black lored tit.
This is probably the only time I've seen this bird up close and clear! It was sometime during the summer of 2009 that I was studying orchids in the tall canopy of Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve that I encountered this bird. It came with nesting material to the very tree I was dangling well over 100 ft off the ground. It did appear startled initially but went about it's business after my colleague and I sat without moving for a bit. I've had several such close up sightings of small birds, which are otherwise difficult to spot from the ground.
The Western Ghats, that runs along the west coast of India, is considered as one of the global biodiversity hot-spots. The Western Ghats comprises of over 5000 vascular plants, of which about 30% of which are endemic to the Ghats. Western Ghats also has over 450 species of birds 35% endemic, 140 mammal species ( around 20% endemic) and 260 reptile species (over 60% endemic). The range also has a number of fresh water fishes and a number of invertebrates most of which are endemic to the region. Similarly, a number of amphibians are endemic to the Western Ghats and the area has become a hotspot of discovery of new species of frogs in the last decade. Info via heartyindia.com. .
