Jean Life Jackets:
In any situation where you find yourself in a body of water without a life vest or flotation devise... make your own. This can be as simple as using the pants on your legs. Tie the two individual leg holes shut and then plunge the jeans upside-down into the water, capturing the air inside. You could then choose to put the crotch of the pants under your abdomen and use it to swim further or to just rest and regain energy. If you’re looking to just rest in the water and ensure air does not escape, then (with either one hand or both) clasp the waist of the pants together and twist a few times, ensuring that no air escapes. #wildernesssurvival#watersurvival#boyscoutsofamerica#marinecorps#bushcraft#survival

I have been experimenting with friction fires for almost a year now. I am starting to forget the details of all that trial and error. It’s time to start writing things down!
It occurred to me that it would be nice to have a dedicated notebook for the purpose. Next, I wondered if anyone else would like such a journal. One thing led to another and now I am thrilled to announce that I have a custom journal for sale!
If you are interested in a lined notebook for documenting your fire-starting efforts just search for “firecraft journal” on amazon or click the link in my bio.
This is the first of many in a series aimed at those practicing bushcraft and survival skills. Tell me what outdoor activities you would like to log in a journal!
I let this fungus dust smolder for 9-10 minutes while I made a tinder bundle on the spot. The bark I used felt pretty damp with moisture, but along with the wind & large ember, it dried out quickly. I did place a small piece of the fungus into the tinder bundle as a possible coal extender just in case, however it ended up not being necessary. I believe that this horse hoof fungus had a good chance at producing an ember with the bow drill if it weren’t for its awkward small size. My stubbornness spun it to mostly dust trying though. Hopefully I cross paths with another larger specimen, as I know that success with it is possible. #wildernessskills#huntergatherer#bushcraft#firemaking#fire#bark#tinder#wildernesssurvival#fungus#outdoorlife#nature

Camping rules. Stare at the fire. Listen to the birds. Jump in the lake. Read. Take a nap. Relax. Watch the sunset. Cook over the fire. Breathe the fresh air.
Check this out! Great ingenuity #instasurvivalgram
Here is our new homemade camping alembic in use. The dirty or salty water in the bottle warms up until it boils and becomes vapor. Vapor then condenses through the copper coil and you get distilled water. After a while the copper coil gets too hot and you need to cool it down with a soaked towel or by submerging it in a cup filled with water. This way you don’t waste water in vapor state. Distilled water is sterilized and can be used for multiple purposes. For instance it can be used to rinse wounds or for general cleaning purposes. In order to drink distilled water you first need to put some salt in it, otherwise in the long range it can be harmful for your health. Vapor is also really useful. It can be used to sterilize medical devices (i.e. needles or scalpels) or to wash cutlery and cookware.

How to make an #igloo (snow hut) on a spiral ❄
Snow is used because the air pockets trapped in it make it an insulator. On the outside, temperatures may be as low as -45°C, but inside the temperature may range from -7°C to 16°C when warmed by body heat alone 🌡
