Wilson and I stood outside the teenagers bedroom and listened at the door. It was dark. It was quiet. It was midday for goodness sake. I knocked and stuck my head in. It took a minute for my eyes to adjust to the gloom. The only light source coming from a large fish tank in the middle of the bedroom where shoals of tiny rainbow coloured fish swam in consentrict circles and a shark hid under a rock at the bottom. I’d been assured by the cheerful man in the fish shop that he wouldn’t grow very big. I wondered if that was actually true as he now seemed to be stuck under his rock. There were other shadowy piles on the bedroom floor. Clothes I presumed as the wardrobe stood open and empty.
The large lump under the duvet stirred. ‘Hello’, I said. ‘There was a grunt’. Wilson went for a closer sniff.
’You need to get up’, I said.
‘Ok’, said the duvet.
‘When we agreed you could have a gap year’, I said, ‘ I didn’t think that would mean spending the entire year in bed’.
‘I have a plan’, said the duvet. ‘Excellent’, I said. ‘I would love to hear all about it’. ‘
‘I’m just fine tuning my options’, the duvet added.
I sighed. I felt slightly exasperated, irritated and vaguely envious.
‘Come on’, I said. ‘You need to be mowing the lawn or hoovering your bedroom while you consider these options at least and the dog needs a walk. There is a whole world out there waiting to be discovered if you got out of bed’. Wilson had finished sniffing the pile of clothes on the floor and leaped on to the lump under the bedclothes.
‘Mum.... can you get the dog off!’ Yelled the duvet’, ‘he’s heavy’. I gave Wilson the nod. He stretched out, distributing his weight evenly. I started to gently the door on the indignant squawks. ‘
‘Oh and bring those clothes down to be washed’, I added. ‘I’m sure that pile just moved’.
Wishing you all a lovely Sunday. Xx
