‘Airfield No. 1 controlled’
Despite fierce resistance, the Marines had captured most of Airfield No. 1 by mid-afternoon on February 20th and had straightened their line out, although they had still not reached the intended D-Day 0-1 line.
Airfield No. 1 was heavily defended as it was the only completed airfield on Iwo Jima with three intersecting runways. It was an active airfield and used by the Japanese until the Marines landed on the island on February 19th. It was during this fight to secure the airfield that Medal of Honor recipient Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone was killed by a Japanese mortar shell. Fighting his way towards Airfield Number 1, he aided a Marine tank that was trapped in an enemy mine field under intense mortar and artillery barrages. He guided the heavy vehicle over the hazardous terrain to safety, despite heavy weapons fire from the Japanese. As he moved along the edge of the airfield, he was killed by Japanese mortar shrapnel.
Once the airfield was captured, it was to be the assignment of the 133rd Naval Construction Battalion to get this airfield operational as soon as the possible. By the time that happened the 133rd had taken so many casualties supporting the 23rd Marines that the assignment was first given to the 31st Construction Battalion but the 62nd Construction Battalion ended up with it. Even so, all three battalions worked together to get it operational.
This was a blow to Kuribayashi who had not expected such a rapid advance, but he took comfort that the Marines had yet to reach his main defensive line and the bad weather was still hampering operations. As the second day drew to a close, heavy rain began to fall adding to the Marines' misery. ________________________________________________________ #worldwar2#worldwartwo#worldwar2history #war#history#warhistory#axis#allied#warphotography#ww2dailyhistory#military#militaryhistory#follow#wwii#ww2#worldwar2incolor#ww2daily#combat#combathistory#fopbattleofiwojimaseries

Sinking of Italian battleship Roma. The Roma a Littorio class battleship met a cruel end. A beautiful ship her and her sisters Vittoro-Venito and recently renamed Littorio to Italia and other ships were sailing to be interned at Malta after Italy left them the War. The Germans planned to sink them and stop them making this journey. Italia suffered a guided Fritz X bomb strike to her forward regions dispite the damage would survive. Roma was not so lucky. The heavy guided bombs launched from high altitude and guided to target would sink her. The first Fritz X to hit Roma penetrated through all decks and detonated under her keel causing structural mechanical and electrical damage throughout the ship. This caused her to loose speed and power and fall out of line, minutes later another Fritz X bomb hit and likely detonated in her forward engine rooms. Seconds after the initial blast a colossal explosion occurred in her 2nd 15inch magazine. The explosion blew the turret up and over the the side of the ship. This caused more catastrophic flooding and damage she began to go down in the bow and list quickly to starboard. She capsized and then broke in 2. She had on her over 2,021 crew and admiralty staff with 1,393 crew loosing their lives. #ww2#battleships#militaryhistory#military#forces#cruiser#destroyer#worldofwarships#history#navy#luftwaffe#italy#navalhistory#dreadnought#war#battle#wreck#sinking

In 1945, a young German widow buried a Leica camera belonging to her husband, who had been killed on the Russian Front. The Allied armies were advancing into Germany and she feared it would be confiscated as war booty.
Now, 75 years later, her grandson is bringing it back to working condition.
I spoke to him about the camera’s haunting history, and how it came into his hands.
The H-4 is the largest float plane in the world, and until April 2019 it had the largest wingspan, surpassed by the the Stratolaunch (last pic). The H-4 came from a 1942 request for a large aircraft that could cross the Atlantic to avoid U-boats. Henry Kaiser (lead designer for Liberty ships) and Hughes teamed up to fulfill the request. After chosing the optimal plane design drama began when many disagreements between Hughes and Kaiser's people started, mixed with the shortage of valuable materials, in 1944 Kaiser withdrew from the project, and left it all to Hughes. The aircraft was mainly built out of plywood/ resin mixes and using the duramold process to form everything, after the war was over and many delays, the H-4 was ready to fly in 1947, it was transported to a custom built hangar on the shoreline, before it could fly, Hughes was called to testify infront of the US Senate over his use of government funds and the slow development, telling them how he promised the H-4 will be a success, and if it fails, he will leave the country, between hearings Hughes hurried back to the H-4 to do taxi tests, on Nov, 2, 1947 the H-4 accomplished flight/ a large leap off the water for 26 seconds at a speed of 135-145mph, proving it could fly, but after the mess, and no need for the plane, it was put in the hangar and never flown again, many things are left unknown still, such as top speed, lifting capacity, max altitude, and handling. The H-4 now lives in Evergreen Aviation Museum. The scale of the H-4 is massive especially it being built out of wood, and a floatplane. The name "Spruce Goose" was given as a nickname by a rival, knowing Hughes would hate that name, dispite mostly being birch. It was 218ft long, 320ft wide and 79ft tall, with 8x R-4360 28 cylinder engines.
