INTERNATIONAL VULTURE AWARENESS DAY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These birds play a crucial in keeping the environment free of diseases and their stomach acid is able to kill the diseases during digestion.
These large birds are not the best of flyers, and so they make use of warm air currents called thermals to keep them in the air when searching for carcasses. Alternatively, they will watch other birds (such as the bateleur) and will follow them if they think they have found a carcass.
Vultures’ eyesight is 8 times stronger than our own! They use their amazing vision to help them spot carcasses from high above the ground. The Rüppells vulture has been recorded at a height of 11.2 km!
Unfortunately, since 2001, 70% of the breeding pairs of vultures in Africa have disappeared.Thousands of vultures die after eating poisoned carcasses and many are killed for their body parts and are sold on the illegal muthi markets.
