Flanked by the Indian Ocean on one side and the Bay of Bengal on the other, Dhanushkodi (meaning end of bow) was once a bustling and flourishing town Thousands of people resided in this tiny town, known as one of the richest fishing belts in the country.
A 1964 cyclone destroyed a railway line that caused over 100 deaths, while the total toll eventually reached over 1,800 casualties.
When you visit, note how small islets and a series of rocks indicate where a small land connection exists between Sri Lanka and the southeastern tip of India. Visit during daylight hours if you don't like exploring spooky abandoned towns on your own.

How to get there: Dhanushkodi beach is around 20kms away from the Rameshwaram town and Rameshwram is well connected by train and road from Chennai, and by road from Bangalore.
The nearest airport is in Madurai, 163 kms from Rameshwaram. .
