The Oita Prefecture Art Museum (OPAM) is an art museum in the city of Oita Japan.
The building was designed with the idea of "openness" in mind. It not only aim to blend in with the environment but also to attract non gallery goers. Unlike a typical art museum, you have to walk in before you know what is in the building, OPAM was designed for anyone to be able to see what's going on inside the building from outside. The extensive use of glass did just that but the architect went further to remove the walls completely. The glass walls facing the street are actually bi-folding doors that can be lifted up when needed. By opening the doors, the atrium becomes an open space where anybody can walk in & enjoy the museum.
