A curious but scenic population of the state threatened rosebay rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum) along a sandstone-bottomed stream in southernmost Ohio. I say curious because this small colony of large, old shrubs is more or less the only one in this area of the state. The exposed sheer shelf of sandstone bedrock it grows out of fits the bill but is also plentiful everywhere else around. I’d always wanted to pay the site a visit and managed to do so last week while in the field. Definitely want to visit next early July to see them in flower!
