I spy two little explorers!! Normally this would be a pretty dramatic shot except they're so little you can barely see them 😂. We visited this cliff walk at First up the mountain from Grindelwald and the views were amazing!
During months of planning for this trip, Abigail had it set in her mind that she was going to play in a cloud and MAYBE take some home with her. This spot in Birg normally has amazing panoramic views of the Alps, but she preferred it this way, making her dream literally come true with a "cloud souvenir in her pocket"... she says 😉!
🍁 Should the leaves still be this colour in January when the heart of winter is upon us - especially in Switzerland!? Is it climate change? Is it global warming? Or is it just the ebb and flow of the seasons and of temperature changes with no one season being the same as the one from the year before? 🧐 #thewaytotravel
Sledging was NOTHING like we thought it would be!!! ... but ended up being one of our favorites from the week so far! ...and Jon's summation of what to equate it to is hilariously Dead. On. (Read to the end)
We started off with plans to hike 3.5 miles up to the Faulhorn Peak which begins the longest sledge run in the world. After over an hour, we weren't even half way there and came to the last crossroads before the point of no return up the rest of the STEEP way to Faulhorn. We decided the extra mile of toboggan run when doing a 10+ mile route wasn't worth it so turned to begin our desent. This is when the first photo was taken... see how excited and optimistic we all look?!? ... Like we've made it, we've accomplished the hard part, now get to the relax and sled down the slopes part?!?! 😂
Well we head down the first little hill (what turned out to be the biggest one we'd see all day) and quickly realized the ways we thought we knew how to steer and turn were Not. Working. We ended that first stretch with all four of us buried / face planted in 3 feet of fresh powder. Right as a mom with an INFANT strapped to her sleds smiling past us perfectly happy and controlled. Abigail thought it was just part of the fun adventure, but Brandon was NOT happy that "he trusted mom to not crash" and here we were (literally top 5 mom guilt moments for Ash of all time 😢) SO after digging snow out of our eyes, coats, pants, shoes, etc., we decide we are going to practice going VERY slow, never letting our speed get up, and literally inching down this massive mountain. This meant we walked and dragged our sled A LOT because we never picked up enough speed to get us through the flatter parts. This also meant we DUG our feet into the snow with every ounce of leg muscle we had to keep our speed down...for. two. hours. ➡️ Thus Jon coined what should be the official sledging tagline: The pain of a wall sit and the danger of swimming with a great white shark! Just close your eyes and picture this whole scene!! 😂
After a while, we got the hang of it and it was one of the most fun family ADVENTURES we've ever had (Brandon even agrees!).
It was amazing to see the transformation of the mountains views after a few days of snow! It was towards the end of our time in Appenzell, when the mountains were covered in snow! A beautiful send off on our relaxing Christmas vacation!
Not gonna bring you some news with this one, however, Switzerland is expensive. Still, no matter how much it'll cost, the country has too many attractions and sites to just be erased from our travel list.
The following tips will help you make some savings every now and then while in the country:
✅ Try the free of charge public transportation services- public transports in such cities like Bern, Lucerne, Basel, Geneva, and Lausanne are free. Ask about this service at the place you're staying.
✅ Rent a free bike- Such places like Zurich, Bern, Geneva, Neuchâtel, Zug or the Canton of Valais are offering free bikes so you could easier stroll around the city. You'll need your ID for this, so don't forget it at your accommodation.
✅ Stick out to free activities- Visit the free wildlife parks, go touring to Bundeshaus in Bern, check the free museums, churches, and forts.
🥶 How’s your winter going so far? Over the last few months we’ve been travelling to get away from the Miami heat but, believe it or not, we woke up to a chill factor of 0 degrees C this morning! It’s actually quite nice to have the variety as over the last almost 3 years of having Miami 🇺🇸 as a base we felt that weather was slightly monotonous - either hot or sweltering! 🥵 Today reminds us more of temperatures while we were at @thedoldergrand in #Zurich a few weeks back 🇨🇭 #thewaytotravel
