Please join Green Apple Books, and The San Francisco Elks, in celebrating the release of Julia Flynn Siler’s newest book, The White Devil’s Daughters, on Saturday May 18th from 6:30 – 8:00 at The Elks Lodge on Union Square.
The White Devil’s Daughters tells the fascinating story of the women who fought slavery in San Francisco’s Chinatown during the first hundred years of Chinese immigration, and offers an in-depth look at the “safe house” that became a refuge for those girls that managed to escape the binds of sexual slavery. Julia Siler is the perfect writer to take on this emotionally sweeping tale, as her previous books have taken on the birth of U.S. imperialism (Lost Kingdom) when Hawaii’s Queen Liliuokalani was stripped from her throne, as well as chronicling the rise and fall of another type of royalty, California’s great wine family, in her best-selling The House of Mondavi.
This free event will be held at San Francisco’s historic Elks Lodge on Union Square as part of a semi-regular series: Cocktails and Conversation at the Lodge, and is a rare opportunity to visit the beautiful, yet normally members-only club. Books will be available for sale, and Julia will be available for signing, so all your bases will be covered!
