Socialization with Nico! Socializing a puppy is so important during their Imprint period from 2-8 months.
The problem is, most people try to socialize puppies in the wrong way with tons of excitement. I totally understand because a lot of the dog training promotes reward and excitement overload.
Nico has been getting tons of rewards but the difference between him and most puppies is he’s getting his rewards when he’s calm, not when he’s excited.
Most people believe an excited puppy is a happy puppy. Not always. Excitement is arousal. Almost every dog I work with in rehabilitation and behavior modification has an issue with excitement.
That dog you see going crazy on leash towards another dog is excited. That dog who panics during fireworks is excited. That dog who loses it at every person that enters the home is excited.
It does not mean they are happy.
In my opinion, the best default energy for a dog is a Calm Follower state of mind. That means the dogs normal energy is calm and followers the direction of anyone they believe to be a leader in the home.
Remember, being a leader isn’t something you just can just say you are. It takes understanding Dog Psychology, effort and dedication to prove to a dog you have what it takes to lead.
It’s why I’ve been putting so much emphasis on puppyhood and why I’m spending so much time with Nico to prove to him I have what it takes to be a leader for him and also to teach him about the world in healthy way.
It’s so important for Nico to have a lot of socialization in a calm way. Before I take him anywhere that we will socialize, I make sure he is fulfilled with exercise so he can be relaxed in Home Depot, at the gas station, etc.
I keep treats on me all day and when I see him doing something I like (usually something calm or respectful) I reward with a treat or affection from me.
I’m making in super obvious and clear what I want from him. If he’s nervous, I calmly guide him through the situation instead of feeling bad for him. If he gets to excited, I take the time to send him back to calmness. Sometimes I will just create some excitement and calm him back down as practice.
