Psychedelic medicines like psilocybin (magic mushrooms) work very differently than traditional antidepressants. -
And scientists have finally confirmed what many people say about psychedelics; they dissolve your ego. -
When people resist the medicine, they often have "a bad trip" because they cannot let go of their ego. -
When people accept the medicine, they often have a good experience and experience positive ego dissolution. -
This study found changes in [cortical] glutamate to be the strongest predictor of negatively experienced ego dissolution, and changes in hippocampal glutamate were found to be the strongest predictor of positively experienced ego dissolution. -
Hopefully, with more research, we will be able to eliminate these "bad trips" and offer psilocybin as a treatment for various mental health disorders. -
Same but different, the chapter in my book that teaches kids, that although we might look different, like different things and be good at different things, WE ARE ALL THE SAME, WE ARE ALL VALUABLE and WE ALL MATTER!
We need to do things better and love people better. Let's show our kids, and this next generation how to do that!
To avoid the difficult conversation with your child is disservice to them! However the conversation doesn’t have to be frightening in fact it can be therapeutic for all involved. Start by sharing that you love them so you are sharing this information to keep them safe ! An adult’s job to to keep kids safe . Then lean in to literature. I attached so many good books and the link has more ! But children’s authors are gifted in tapping into a child’s brain in ways that is easy for them to understand . Let writers do their job . As you read the child may have questions . You answer the best you know how . It’s okay to say I don’t know . Not knowing doesn’t mean you’re less than it just means you don’t know . You can find the answer later. If they’re sad and confused share that you are too . Transparency is key ! The most important components of this conversation is to be honest and to Express that you love and care about them . Because truly this is uncertain times and as we trend through the pain and develop a new normal unconditional love is all they have to lean on during these uncertain times . #injustice#riot2020#blackchildrensbooks#blackchildrenlivesmatter#talktoyourkids#education#elementaryteacher#kindergarten#childliteracy#blackwomenread#blackwomenwrite#ampublishing#indiewriter
Featured Highlight from the Permanent Collection - June 1
Linda Connor (American, b. 1944), Untitled, 1976; Gold chloride-toned contact print; 8 x 9.875 in. Collection Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, gift of Drs. Antonio & Luz Racela.
This photograph by Linda Connor, from her 1979 monograph "SOLOS," was made with an early-20th-century 8-by-10 inch Century view camera and a soft-focus “semi-achromatic” lens, which had both belonged to her great-aunt. The soft-focus lens combined with the 19th-century process of gold toning contact prints achieve, in Connor’s words, “a kind of timeless, somewhat mysterious, metaphoric, poetic kind of vision … rather dreamlike and often symbolic.”
In Untitled, a triangular stack of 66 tin cans is transformed as if by magic. The aberrations of light and shadow produced by the unique optics of the lens allow Connor to transmute ordinary objects into something ethereal and spectacular. Light bounces out of the cans and appears to illuminate them from within, producing secondary and tertiary circles of light, further complicating the simple arrangement.
The equilateral triangle used here as a symbol has been loaded with meaning throughout time and in various belief systems. For instance, in Christianity the triangle represents God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; in Ancient Egypt, the trinity represented the father, Osiris, the mother, Isis, and the son, Horus. Other belief systems view the triangle as representing true wisdom or perfection. Connor allows the meaning to change so that each viewer can see something different. She is “deeply interested in how to get photography, which so handily describes the facts of our world, to also move our spirits closer to the silent places where other realities and mysteries reside.”

I will never understand what it’s like to live as a person of colour. I also understand that I will not singlehandedly change the world, but I can educate my kids because when you know better, you do better.
A few values have always been important to me and with recent tragic events they’ve been on my mind even more these days. There are 2 that really stand out right now.
1. Speak up and stand up for what you believe in, even if it’s not the popular choice. While some people might not appreciate it, if we all stay silent nothing will ever change. I don’t want to delve into the “what ifs” because it doesn’t change what happened, but what runs through my mind over and over is that there wasn’t just one officer there.
2. Although we may not all look the same, express ourselves in the same ways, eat the same things, make the same choices etc., we are all the same deep down and it’s important to not only accept others for these differences, but respect, appreciate and celebrate the diversity. People aren’t born hating someone for the colour of their skin, their religion etc., it’s learned. We need to set the example for our children, they are sponges and are listening even when we think they aren’t.
It’s always been very important to me to teach my kids these values and I’ve done that along the way, but know I can always do more. I want my boys to always be accepting of others, be confident with who they are even if someone isn’t accepting of them and speak up if they feel something isn’t right.
This is my opinion, and even if you don’t agree with it, I hope you’re able to take something from it and that it makes you think.

It's not easy to comment events like the murder of George Floyd by a policeman in an Instagram post. I just wanted to say that we cannot call ourselves human beings if we accept that an innocent person can be killed because of his/her skin color. We must educate ourselves about each other's stories and differences and learn to respect every single life. My reading suggestions: Bluebird, bluebird by Attica Locke (Faber and Faber, 2017), The Two-Bear Mambo by Joe R. Lansdale (Mysterious Press, 1995). #georgefloyd#stopracism#education
